The position is on the project ERC funded IceAGenT. In this project, we will develop innovative methods for studies of ancient and modern DNA. We will build on existing data as well as core new lakes for ancient sedimentary DNA. This will be supplemented by studies of contemporary phylogeography. The aim is to revisit glacial survival and postglacial dispersal, with the ultimate aim of unifying phylogeography with palaeoecology.

The position´s affiliation

The position is attached to the University Museum. The University Museum is responsible for research, dissemination and collection of both natural history and cultural-historical material from Northern Norway. The position is attached to the scientific community within Natural Sciences, which has the responsibility for developing and maintaining scientific collections of objects as well as public outreach, including the Tromsø Arctic Alpine Botanical Garden. Natural Sciences has a permanent staff of 16, of which nine are in academic positions. At the moment, four PhD students, two postdocs and two researcher are connected to the Natural Sciences, and we have laboratories for modern and ancient DNA analyses. The position is within the research group for Ecosystem Genomics, which currently host five large projects: Norwegian Barcode of Life, ECOGEN, ERC – TerrACE, Biodiversa FATE, and ERC - IceAGenT .

Working duties/tasks

The technician will be responsible for preparation of field campaigns, participate in fieldwork, analyse lake sediments for lithology and molecular diversity, and maintain and run our bioinformatic pipeline. Other task include DNA sample collection archiving, arranging meetings and some administrative work related to the project. When relevant, the technician will also participate at conferences.

Required qualifications

We are seeking a person who has experience in both molecular and bioinformatics methods. The person also needs to be able to participate in field campaigns for up to 6 weeks. A Norwegian master degree in the subject or a corresponding foreign master degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian master degree is required. Driving licence and English language skills are required. Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills are advantages. Average physical condition is sufficient for the fieldwork. Personal suitability and aptitude will be prioritised.

Remuneration of technician positions are in salary code 1087 on the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, (depending on qualifications). There is a 2% deduction for contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
