About The Faculty of Science and Technology

The Faculty of Science and Technology (REALTEK) develops research-based knowledge and educates civil engineers and lecturers needed to reach the UN's sustainability goals. We have approximately 150 employees, 70 PhD students and soon 1500 students. The education and research at REALTEK cover a broad spectrum of disciplines.


This includes data science, mechanics and process engineering, robotics, construction and architecture, industrial economics, environmental physics and renewable energy, geomatics, water and environmental engineering, applied mathematics as well as secondary school teacher education in natural sciences and use of natural resources such as in agriculture, forestry and aquaculture. The workplace is in Ås, 30 km from Oslo.

About the position

The Faculty of Science and Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant three-year postdoctoral position related to applied mathematics.

This is a full-time limited-term position affiliated with the Mathematics Section at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (Realtek) of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) in Ås, just outside Oslo, the capital of Norway.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to work on the project “Conceptual Mathematical Models in Sustainable Development”. This project is funded by the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The position is limited to 36 months, and the expected starting date is 01.09.2020, but a later date might be possible.

Main tasks

The main purpose of the post-doctoral position is to qualify for work in high-level scientific positions.

The research component of the present project will complement the existing research activities on systems-biological models in the research group of applied mathematics being a part of a long-term strategic build-up of the competence in mathematical modeling at the Faculty of Science and Technology. The project aims at studying different aspects of systems-biological and bioeconomic models. Emphasis will be put on combination of theoretical and numerical analysis for such models.

The successful candidate is supposed to lecture undergraduate courses at the university as well as to assist the faculty members in teaching their courses. The instruction language may be English. This will comprise the educational component of the project.

Qualification requirements, desired experiences, knowledge and personal qualities

Required Academic qualifications

  • PhD degree in applied mathematics or mathematics.
  • Publications in mathematical journals.

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

  • Applicants with documented research in dynamical systems theory, stochastic analysis, functional analysis, control and optimization theory as well as computational mathematics will be given preference.
  • Next in the assessment of the candidates, the emphasis will be put on documented research in biosciences.
  • Documented research collaboration with scientists in systems biology, computer science, physics and engineering sciences will be taken into account in the assessment.
  • Programming skills of the candidates will be of importance.
  • Documented qualifications and experience in teaching university courses in mathematics will be evaluated as well.

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1352 Postdoctoral Fellow, wage framework 24, salary grade 59-67 (NOK 523.200-605.500), depending on qualifications. Seniority Promotion in position.
