Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Social Anthropology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years. In addition to salary and benefits, the position includes fieldwork research funds.

The postdoctoral research fellow position is part of a project titled, “Habitable Air: Urban Inequality in the Time of Climate Change.” The project, which begins in 2022 and ends in 2026, is funded by the Research Council of Norway’s Program for Groundbreaking Research. The project focuses on climate change and unequal distributions of pollution. Preference will be given to applications that address such topics as: air pollution, climate change, energy, politics, cities, health, gender, race, social and economic inequality. Preference will be given to applications that focus on regional areas of South Africa and/or the United States. A research interest in Germany may also be considered. The working environment for this position will be the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen. The successful candidate is expected to be based in Bergen during the project period (except for fieldwork periods).

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a PhD in Social Anthropology or closely related fields (e.g. Geography, or History). The applicant must have submitted a doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Experience in ethnographic research
  • Work independently and in a structured manner, as well as have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.

Potential candidates may be invited to the department for an interview and might be asked to hold a trial lecture in a given topic. Applicants whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is 2 year(s). Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

A research proposal of 4-5 pages must accompany the application. The proposal should contain a progress plan for the different parts of the research work, as well as a plan regarding publishing. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

A budget must be set up for operating expenses.
