The Department of Computer Science at UiT The Arctic University of Norway has a position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow vacant. The position is affiliated with the AI4EUROPE research project.
The position is a fixed term position for a duration of three years and with a commencement date in late 2022. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.
The position can additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment.
The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.
The position’s affiliation
The Department of Computer Science provides an active international research environment with 27 tenured faculty members, 11 adjunct professors, 9 post doctors and researchers, 9 technical/administrative staff members and about 35 PhD students from different countries.
The Health Data Lab does interdisciplinary research combining machine learning and experimental computer science with real problems, applications, and data obtained from our biomedical research collaborators. The lab is actively involved in innovation activities including The Digital Technology Lab where we aim to increase the number of technology startups in Tromsø.
The research in the Open Distributed Systems (ODS) group is centered around middleware that facilitates the construction of distributed applications of various kinds, with an emphasis on interoperability and adaptability issues. The group focuses on support for next-generation applications, mobility, composition-based web applications, real-time collaboration, information exchange, analysis of data and a combination of information from multiple sources. Specific issues include adaptability, context-awareness, personalization, semantic-based information management, applied security, privacy, services orchestration, collaborative editing, consistency, and reliability. Recent activities have included IoT and environmentally friendly transportation, personalization, privacy aware computation of user data, and mobile business infrastructures.
The position's field of research
The person hired in this position will do the work for the main deliverables from UiT to the AI4EUROPE project. The main aim of AI4Europe is to support and facilitate a sustainable digital platform and experimentation environment through the creation of open research channels and mechanisms that foster the European AI research ecosystem, academic and industrial, and that maximises the academic, social, and industrial impact while it seamlessly integrates other projects, platforms, and solutions.
The main activities in AI4EUROPE for UiT are in two work packages. First, in integration of tools and services to support the AI research community we will build tools for research collaboration, reproducible research, and responsible research. In addition, we will engage with the AI researchers that will use these tools. Second, in the AI supportive physical environments work package, we will enable the use of Cloud Computing resources support for the developed tools, including on 5G based edge devices. We also contribute to the development of a decentralized architecture for an open AI community by integrating and supporting the use of the developed services and software packages.
The positions field of research is therefore the development of infrastructure systems to support novel AI research methods, and to enable the use of Norwegian public datasets in AI research. This includes: (i) the development of abstraction, data structures, and interfaces to enable easy and powerful interactive analyses in a notebook environment; (ii) development of an approach to integrate datasets, and machine learning models trained on datasets, from many Norwegian and European sources; (iii) and the application of MLOps best practices to ensure reproducible analyses and to monitor adherence to responsible research guidelines. In addition, the research will build novel systems for using 5G edge devices to develop and deploy AI solutions.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in computer science, and a publication record that documents solid expertise in experimental computer science, and strong technical skills. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.
We are looking for applicants with a strong interest in building the infrastructure needed for the upcoming AI methods. Previous experience in systems development, data management, networking, and applied machine learning is therefore considered an advantage. It is also beneficial if the applicant has an interest and previous experience in collaboration with inter-disciplinary or industrial collaboration.
The applicants should have demonstrated increased scientific maturity in their selection of issues, application of methods, and documentation of results. Research results should be backed by thorough experiments and analysis.
Applicants should have a good command of English.

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position. The working hours shall primarily be utilized for research, research-related activities and research administration. The post doctor is expected to participate professionally within the department, and can be assigned to teaching, teaching related work, supervision of students, presentations for faculty and students, laboratory assignments etc, in an amount equivalent up to 25% of the position.
The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
