The position

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology. The position is affiliated with the Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of two years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The workplace is at UiT in Narvik. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The supporting grant for this position is a part of the research project, ‘Multi-disciplinary Study of Atmospheric Ice Accretion Physics & Developing Optimal Technological Solutions to Minimize Ice Accretion Effects (nICE)’ funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The nICE project aims to strengthen the atmospheric icing related multi-disciplinary research activities in and improve knowledge about atmospheric ice accretion physics and its effects.

If you receive a personal overseas research grant from NFR it is possible to apply NFR for an extension of the fellowship period corresponding to the length of the stay abroad (minimum three months, maximum 12 months).

The position's field of research

This postdoctoral position will mainly focus on issues related to atmospheric icing on structures and will address the topics related to modelling of ice accretion physics and ice mitigation technological developments. The candidate should have research interests related to ice accretion physics modelling, ice detection and mitigation techniques. Moreover, we seek candidates whose research interest also enhance and complement the other activities of the Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group.

Moreover, the selected candidate is also expected to participate in other activities of the research group and support the strategic development plan. This may include the scientific publications, new project proposals, designing of lab infrastructure and co-supervision of master/PhD students.

The research focus for this position will be:

  • Study of atmospheric icing on structures
  • Ice mitigation strategy (anti/deicing)
  • Mesoscale modelling & ice load map/analytical modelling of icing.

The planned activities will be carried out using analytical, numerical, and experimental techniques.

The goals of the position are:

  • Improved understanding of atmospheric ice accretion physics and its effects on structures.
  • Technological development and knowledge enhancement regarding optimal anti/deicing systems.
  • Design and development of icing lab infrastructure.
  • Scientific publications in high ranked international journals.
  • Support interdisciplinary work within and between research groups on the topic.

The aim of this postdoctoral position is also to provide the candidate with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote the strategic path, the selected candidate is also required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualifications

The Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology has a strategic vision to be among the technological leading communities for research, academic and innovation related to Arctic and cold climate technology. The candidate for this postdoctoral fellowship will be selected in accordance with this vision.

This position requires a doctoral degree (PhD) in engineering with specialization in topics related to cold climate technology and atmospheric icing on structures. A doctoral degree (PhD) within mechanical / civil/ industrial/ aerospace engineering or similar are preferred. The PhD degree must be equivalent to Norwegian doctoral degree.

A good knowledge of atmospheric ice accretion physics, atmospheric icing on structures and cold climate technology is required. A good understanding of numerical, experimental, and field measurements is required to carry out the planned activities.

Applicants with good knowledge within these main subject areas are preferred:

  • Multiphase flow modeling /CFD (Ice accretion physics)
  • Cold climate technology
  • Meso scale modelling
  • Ice detection and mitigation

The candidate must have relevant scientific publications and documented research experience on issues related to atmospheric icing on structures. A good track record of scientific publications in the fields related to atmospheric icing is preferred.

The candidate is expected to participate in designing of cold climate lab infrastructure and performing numerical simulations and lab-based experiments related to icing on structures. Good skills of lab-based experimentation (wind tunnel & icing tunnel operations) and filed measurements related to icing are preferred.

Candidate is also expected to support the Arctic Technology and Icing group activities related to initiating new project proposals and supporting the existing research activities.

Good oral and written communication skills in English language is required.

During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidate’s motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position. The successful applicant should be highly motivated, creative, have the capability to work independently as well as in collaboration with other members of the research group and have good communication skills.

At UiT we put emphasis on the quality, relevance and significance of the research work and not on where the work is published, in accordance with the principles of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).
