The position

At the Department of Community Medicine a position is available for a Postdoctoral research fellow in Biostatistics. The position is affiliated with the Systems Epidemiology Research group and will be part of the RCN funded “Healthy choices and the social gradient” project. The candidate will be working in close collaboration with colleagues at the department and the international partners of the project.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of three years. However, the position might be extended to four years if the candidate is involved in teaching at the department. The position can additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant is able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The appointed Postdoctoral Fellow must have its daily workplace at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, but the candidate is expected to work in periods at the partner institutions.

The project

The “Healthy Choices” project is a five-year project which started in January 2020, where the overall objective is to provide new insight into the complex interrelationships between health-related choices, the social gradient and modifiable risk factors, as well as building actionable knowledge among the public and decision makers to reduce inequalities in health. This position is part of WP 3, a work package focused on the social and behavioral pathways that shape health over the life course and across generations. The present postdoctoral position is dedicated to the selection and application of appropriate statistical methods for the project, within the framework of generalized multilevel structural equation modelling, and joint modelling of longitudinal and event time data.

The project involves data and samples from the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study (NOWAC) and the Tromsø Study, which are both studies managed at the Department of Community Medicine, UiT. More information can be found here and here.

Qualifications

For appointment as Post-doctoral research fellow, the applicant requires a Norwegian doctoral degree or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. For this position, the candidate should have a master’s degree in statistics or other natural science, and a PhD within the field of biostatistics, bioinformatics or epidemiology. Additionally, documented fluency in English is required. The candidate must also have extensive experience with computing and programming, preferably in data analysis environments such as STATA or R.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal for the qualifying work. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity.

During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidates motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.
