PhD-position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, a PhD-position (100 %) is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The position is funded by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

The Mohn Center for Diabetes Precision Medicine is a national referral center for patients with diabetes and an internationally recognized center for precision medicine. This project proposes to use machine learning on rich biobank and registry information to better tailor the care provided to patients. The candidate will be given the opportunity to work on the unique Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), the Norwegian Diabetes Registry, and the Norwegian MODY registry.

In collaboration with the other members of the team, the candidate will be in charge of designing genetic, proteomic, and phenotypic risk scores for patients with diabetes. These scores will be used to locate patients on the spectrum of the different forms of diabetes, and when possible, adapt medical care accordingly. The PhD candidate will be given the necessary training to conduct this ambitious project, the opportunity to contribute to high-profile research publications, and receive active mentoring for the development of their career.

The project will be led under the joint supervision of the team of Professor Njølstad at the Mohn Center for Diabetes Precision Medicine and Professor Miriam Udler at the Broad institute of MIT and Harvard and the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. The candidate will be located at the Mohn Center for Diabetes Precision Medicine at the Children and Youth Hospital in Bergen, Norway; and will be offered the opportunity to conduct research stays in the team of Professor Miriam Udler.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in Medical data science, genomics, or biomedicine

Applicants must

  • explain their motivation for the proposed project/work tasks in their application letter
  • have solid computer science, mathematics, or biomedical knowledge, and be eager to expand their knowledge in these fields with application in the clinics.
  • be skilled with the handling of large data and proficient in one programming language (e.g. Python or R).
  • be able to work independently in a structured manner, willing to constantly learn and challenge themselves, and demonstrate good collaborative skills and team spirit.
  • be fluent in both written and oral English

About the PhD position:

Organized research training - PhD program:

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position:

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
