The position

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Health Sciences has a PhD position available for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD). The position is attached to the Department of Clinical Medicine, K. G. Jebsen - Thrombosis Research andExpertise Center (TREC) and the project title is ‘Socioeconomic status and the risk of venous thromboembolism’.

The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shallparticipate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The project

VTE is a collective term for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). VTE is a frequent disease affecting 1.1 mill Europeans annually with severe and irreversible complications, including 540,000 VTE-related deaths. VTE associated with hospitalization has been reported to be a leading cause of disability adjusted life years. More detailed data on theburden of VTE is requested to inform policy and resource allocation in health systems, and to evaluate whether improved utilization of preventive measures will reduce this burden.

The overall aim of this project is to investigate the association between socioeconomic status and the future risk of VTE.There will be possibilities for up to one year research stay abroad with one of the partners of K. G. Jebsen TREC during the project period.

About K. G. Jebsen TREC

K. G. Jebsen TREC is a Research Center in translational medicine funded by the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation, UiT – the Arctic university of Norway, and the North Norwegian Health Authorities. Professor John-Bjarne Hansen is the head of K. G. Jebsen TREC. TheCenter has 4.6 permanent scientific positions (professors), 3 technical positions, one statistician, and 15-20 temporary scientific positions (PhD-students, researchers and postdoctors).

In addition, K. G. Jebsen TREC has partners in Tromsø, Bodø, Oslo, Stockholm, Århus and Leiden.The overall aim of K. G. Jebsen TREC is to identify novel inherited and environmental risk factors and extend the understanding of the pathogenesis in venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Qualifications

The suitable candidate must hold a Master’s Degree within social sciences or other relevant areas to the project. Master and medical students in the final stages are also qualified to apply,but have to document completed degree before employment.The applicant must speak and write English and Norwegian fluently. Previous experience within the field of venous thromboembolism is desirable and will be given weight.

25 % of the position will be used for administrative coordinating duties within research, economy and human resources in K. G. Jebsen TREC. Previous work experience within economy, research administration and human resource management from the public sector is therefore desirable and will be given weight.The candidate must be able to work systematic, independent and have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team.Emphasis will be placed on the communicative and collaborative skills, as well as personal suitability and the motivation and interest in the project.

Proficiency in the English language can be documented in the following ways:

  • Diploma from a Norwegian upper secondary school with both spoken and written English (140 hours)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • IELTS (International English Testing Service)
  • Completed university degree in the field of English language or literature
  • One year’s completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or USA, for which English was the language of instruction.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. During this assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as shown by:

  • Master thesis or equivalent
  • Any other academic works
  • Documented ability to work independently
  • Skills in scientific writing in English
  • Knowledge and interest of the project`s specific topic
  • Interest and motivation for this specific project

In addition, consideration may be given to work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD studies, and to any teaching qualifications. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experienced from popularization and experience/education from other types of dissemination. Information and material to be considered during the assessment must be submitted by the stipulated deadline.

The applicants who are assessed as the best qualified will called to an interview. The interview shall among other things clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.

Working conditions

The normal period of employment is four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year, distributed as 25 % per year, shall be used for administrative duties in K. G. Jebsen TREC according to the guidelines, cf. Guidelines for the research fellow’s duties.

A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the PhD Candidate has already completed parts of their research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.

The successful applicant must be willing to teach at the Department's various courses. The duties will be allocated based on the applicant's qualifications and the needs of the Department, and may include lecturing, leading seminars, and leading or assisting in lab courses.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017 or code 1378 depending on qualifications. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
