The Institute of Health and Society is one of three institutes at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. The Institute covers various disciplines and consists of six departments: General Practice, Health Sciences, Health Management and Health Economics, Medical Ethics, Community Medicine and Global Health and Nursing Science.

The Institute of Health and Society bases its work on a complex understanding of disease, health and health systems. Culture, environment, economics, society and biology play direct and indirect roles. Our teaching responsibilities include seven Master’s programs, one Bachelor program and part of the Faculty’s medical school and PhD-program. We employ about 220 FTE and have almost 700 Bachelor and Master students. Annual income is about 200 mill NOK, half of which is external funding. Our researchers play an active part of public policy and disseminate new knowledge through many channels.

Job description

A permanent, 20% position is available at the Institute of Health and Society for a Professor within the field of Global Health.

The Institute of Health and Society aims to strengthen its research capacity in ‘one health’ in low-and middle-income countries. We seek candidates with a medical degree who have extensive research experience in global one health on issues that should include poverty-related diseases of the infectious as well as non-infectious nature, neglected zoonotic diseases with the ensuing one health concept, and digital health. The position will be allocated to the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health and tied to the Medical Faculty’s Center of Global Health.

Professors divide their time equally between research and teaching. The person appointed will lead and initiate research, supervise researchers, participate in teaching students and research fellows and undertake duties in connection with examinations, as well as undertaking administrative tasks as required by the prevailing regulations.

The successful applicant will have a plan for development of her/his research, and for acquiring externally funded research projects. High quality of research, and publishing in peer-reviewed international journals is expected. The applicant is asked to describe his/her research profile, with respect to strategic plans and existing research at the institute/department.

Qualification requirements

  • Doctoral degree in the academic field concerned or equivalent expertise, and relevant research experience.
  • Educational competence will count positively. Applicants who do not have documented basic university pedagogical competence must acquire this within two years from appointment.
  • Documentation of qualifications in dissemination, management and administration will count positively.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Extensive research experience in global health

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment are given a deadline of two years to learn Norwegian.

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants: In the ranking of competent applicants, the whole range of qualifications shall be considered, assessed and explicitly ascribed weight. Particular emphasis will be attached to applicants' scientific publications during the past five years and that are closely related to the area in which the post is advertised. Hiring procedures are regulated in "Rules for appointing Professors and Associate Professors” as well as "Rules on pedagogical competence".

A screening committee will invite the most relevant candidates to submit up to 10 scientific articles for expert assessment. For this reason, scientific articles must not be uploaded with the application.
