Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Algebraic Geometry

The Department of Mathematics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. The Department is engaged in teaching and research covering a wide spectrum of subjects within mathematics, mechanics and statistics. The research is on theory, methods and applications. The areas represented include: fluid mechanics, biomechanics, statistics and data science, computational mathematics, combinatorics, partial differential equations, stochastics and risk, algebra, geometry, topology, operator algebras, complex analysis and logic.
We have almost 50 persons in permanent academic positions and a large number of post docs and Ph.D. students. We also have an administrative and technical staff. The department represents a leading research environment in mathematical areas in Norway, and has a highly international profile.
Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow available at Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.
Starting date no later than September 1st, 2023.
The appointment is a fulltime position and is for a period of two years.
No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.
The supporting grant for this position is part of the project "Orthogonal gauge duality & non-commutative geometry" funded by the Research Council of Norway. The candidate should have research interests related to the themes of this project, which are the homological algebra of algebraic varieties (e.g. derived categories of coherent sheaves, semi-orthogonal decompositions, non-commutative K3 surfaces) and moduli spaces and enumerative geometry of sheaves/curves (e.g. Donaldson-Thomas/Gromov-Witten invariants).
Moreover, we seek candidates whose research interests enhance and complement the research group in algebraic geometry. These include for example birational geometry, complex geometry, moduli spaces, and classical algebraic geometry. Information about the Algebraic Geometry group at UiO can be found here.
The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in mathematics. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date of this job posting. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment.
- The candidate must have documented research experience in algebraic geometry. Work related to homological algebra in algebraic geometry or to enumerative geometry is an advantage.
- The successful applicant should be highly motivated, have the capability to work independently as well as in collaboration with members of the research group, and have good communication skills.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English or a Scandinavian language are required.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Fellow period at the University of Oslo.
No one can be appointed twice as a Postdoctoral fellow financed with funds from The Research Council of Norway (NFR).
If an applicant has applied for and been granted funding for a fulltime research stay abroad while being employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the employment will be prolonged with the equivalent time as the research stay, but for no longer than of twelve months ( thus extending the employment to a maximum of four years).
