Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research lab located in Oslo, Norway. Simula conducts Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research in the fields of scientific computing, software engineering, communication systems, machine learning and cybersecurity.


Simula's main objective is to create knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high-quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer, and commercialization. Since 2001, scientific evaluations conducted by the Research Council of Norway has repeatedly placed Simula at the forefront of international research in ICT. The most recent in-depth evaluation was published in 2017, grading the full range of research at Simula as “excellent”.

Project and Job descriptionIn the department of Holistic systems at SimulaMet we are now seeking a Postdoctoral researcher to work together with the group on challenging problems within the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and societal important topics such as health and sport science and child welfare.

Example use cases we are working on are Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering and In search of the ideal sperm cell - OsloMet.

Our goal is to develop novel methodologies and algorithms for machine learning and data mining and employ them to address challenging problems in high-impact applications. We seek to create and apply novel methods to provide new insights in a wide variety of applications ranging from biomedical signals and image analysis, systems biology to climate and communication networks, while contributing to the foundations of the scientific field. We are looking for researchers with extensive experience in the field of artificial intelligence / machine learning with a focus on deep learning, explainable AI (XAI) and systems .

The Postdoctoral researcher in this project will work on the development of AI-based systems addressing basic problems in the different application areas. This may include the development of new methods and algorithms, building complete systems taking the whole pipeline into account from data acquisition to explanation of the results to the final users.

We are looking for interested candidates who:Have a completed (before the position starts) PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or Computer Science with excellent grades.

experience with machine learning frameworks, such as Pytorch that does beyond black box usage. Excellent level of spoken and written English, good interpersonal and communication skills, are curious and creative, and show the willingness to learn and work as part of an international and interdisciplinary team.

Knowledge of explainable AI, AI system and applications and AI in medicine or sport science are an advantage.
