About The Faculty of Science and Technology
The Faculty of Science and Technology (REALTEK) develops research-based knowledge and educates civil engineers and lecturers needed to reach the UN's sustainability goals. We have approximately 150 employees, 70 PhD students and soon 1500 students. The education and research at REALTEK cover a broad spectrum of disciplines.
This includes data science, mechanics and process engineering, robotics, construction and architecture, industrial economics, environmental physics and renewable energy, geomatics, water and environmental engineering, applied mathematics as well as secondary school teacher education in natural sciences and use of natural resources such as in agriculture, forestry and aquaculture. The workplace is in Ås, 30 km from Oslo.

About the position
The Faculty of Science and Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant PhD–position related to aquaculture. The PhD position is for a period of 3 years, or up to 4 years if teaching and other work duties are agreed.
Optimizing the cage environment by using technology to reduce lice turn-on and stabilize oxygen concentration at an acceptable level can result in significant financial gain due to fewer delusions, better growth, and lower mortality.
Optimization of the cage environment requires a substantial amount of data on the relevant parameters and the factors that influence them. Surveys show little available data on water quality parameters in cages and that there is uncertainty about the data's validity and reliability.
The work aims are to provide data for optimizing the environment in a semi-closed cage, as well as developing a model tool for optimal oxygenation.
Planned activities during the project period:
- Literature review
- Data capture in cages for use in optimizing cage environment (selection of sensor technology, location of sensors, data quality)
- Data processing and analysis
- Development of a model for optimal oxygenation in semi-closed systems
The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.
The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master's degree level. Candidates submitting MSs thesis by 30. June 2021 may be considered. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies and document proficiency in both written and oral English. Required academic qualifications:
- Master degree or equivalent in Industrial economics or aquaculture engineering
Desired academic qualifications
- Aquaculture production
- Knowledge on computer science, statistics, mathematical modelling and programming
The applicant must document expertise and interest in the research subject.
Required personal skills
- Ability for independent work displaying creativity and reflective thinking
- Analytical and academic approach to research questions
- Good collaborative/social skills
- Proficiency in Norwegian and English, both written and spoken (please see Norwegian and English language requirements in PhD regulations at NMBU)
The main criteria for evaluating the applicants includes their academic records, and scientific capacity and achievements along the below outlined preferences; particularly originality, independence as well as ability to work in a team. Selected applicants will be invited for an interview or online interview as a part of the evaluation. The studies will be based at the Faculty of Science and Technology (REALTEK), NMBU, Campus Ås.
Remuneration and further information
The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1017 PhD. Fellow. PhD. Fellows are normally placed in pay grade 54 (NOK 482.200,-) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment and follow ordinary meriting regulations.
Terms of employment are governed by Norwegian guidelines for PhD fellowships at Universities and University Colleges.
