About the position

The School of Landscape Architecture, Faculty for Landscape and Society at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is announcing a 3-year PhD fellowship position. The positions will be affiliated with the research groups History and theory in landscape architecture.

The PhD project aims to investigate the topic of commemoration from a landscape architectural perspective. Through historical and theoretical studies, the project aims at illustrating the use of landscapes and landscape elements for commemorative purposes. A working method could be to provide critical analyses of existing cases, examining their design methods and approaches.

Possible research questions are for example: how are landscape and landscape elements designed/used for commemorative purposes, and why? How are such landscapes perceived by different audiences? What aesthetic, ethic and other issues are taken care of, and in what ways? How have commemorative landscapes contributed to the understanding of history, personal and collective memories, identities, and democracy? The PhD project will contribute to the landscape profession by generating new knowledge and design approaches. It also expands the meaning of landscape by contributing to peace and democracy, which is obviously needed today.
