UiT The Arctic University of Norway, The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) has a position available for PhD in fishing gear technology. The position is affiliated with The Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS) and the research group HARVEST. The main task of BFE is to conduct teaching and research dissemination at a high national and international level within all relevant fields. Prioritized research areas are aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, climate, life in the arctic, marine bioprospecting, fish health, seafood products, business and macroeconomics, resources and environment, markets and management of marine resources. The interdisciplinary profile of the faculty provides good opportunity to develop research projects involving several research groups at the faculty according to its strategy.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø.

You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time, within 6 months after receiving the offer.

The position is a fixed term position within the HARVEST group for a duration of 3 years. The research group HARVEST carries out research within the following main areas: selectivity and bycatch issues (with focus on the Arctic fisheries), assessment of fishing efficiency, development of environmentally friendly fishing gears, experimental designs (on board research and commercial vessels); developing new models and data-analyses (i.e. novelty in statistics); testing of modified and new designs of fishing gears.

The position is in collaboration with the Department of Marine Biology. The other available position, PhD Fellow in Biological Oceanography, is allocated to Research Area 2 (RA2) of SFI HARVEST: Understand and predict ecosystem dynamics to provide information and knowledge needed for sustainable fisheries management and harvesting.

The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. Information about the application process for admission to the PhD programme, application form and regulations for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor(PhD) are available here.

The position's field of research

This PhD position is connected to the centre for research-based innovation ", Technologies for sustainable biomarine value creation (SFI HARVEST)". The objective of SFI HARVEST is to develop knowledge and technologies for responsible harvesting and processing of lower trophic marine resources (mesopelagic fish species, krill, Calanus sp.), allowing sustainable growth of Norway's biomarine industries, Research Area 4 (RA4): Develop cost-efficient and environmentally friendly harvesting and onboard processing technologies.

The research and innovation challenges in RA4 are: 1) Modelling the interaction between fish and harvesting equipment. 2) Cost-effective monitoring of harvest species while trawling. 3) Species and size selection during fishing. 4) Fractionation of the catch before onboard handling. 5) Cost- and energy-effective onboard preservation of mesopelagic species. 6) Cost-effective removal of plastics in the open ocean.

The PhD candidate is expected to collect own data on board fishing vessels, prepare and analysis of data, and publish scientific results in international peer-reviewed journals. The candidate is expected to participate in science communication events (i.e. conferences and workshops) and encouraged to expend time abroad at one (or more) of the international partner institutions in the centre.
