Project/Job description
In the department of Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis, we are now seeking a Postdoctoral researcher to work on numerical simulation and analysis of brain tumors. The candidate may start immediately if offered the position. Initially, the candidate is hired for a 3 year contract.
Usually, tumor patients will undergo injection of contrast agents into the blood vessels to identify where the contrast agent leaks into the brain. These results guide surgeons in operations. Very recently, we have discovered that an alternative injection into the fluid spaces around the brain (Subarachnoid Spaces) has the potential to reveal new information on brain tumors. From the fluid spaces around the brain, the contrast reaches the tumor along fluid pathways known as perivascular spaces, vital for clearance of waste products from the brain. The Postdoctoral researcher will use simulation of fluid flow, poroelasticity and diffusion together with imaging data and try to explain the interplay between these fluid pathways and the observed contrast increase in and around brain tumors. These investigations will extend the research front on how the brain gets rid of toxic waste, and look for a common link between brain cancer and neurodegenerative disease such as e.g. Alzheimer's disease.
The core team working on the project will consist of one PhD-student, one Postdoctoral Researcher and one Research Scientist at Simula Research Laboratory. The Postdoctoral researcher may serve as a co-supervisor for the PhD-student if interested. We will collaborate closely with Oslo University Hospital in both data gathering (Neuroimaging) and to best connect results from the MRI analysis to mechanical properties of the brain (MRI Research and Technology).
