The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is Norway's leading research institute for the aquatic environment, working across a wide range of environmental, climate and resource issues. Are you our new Research Manager for the Freshwater Ecology Team?

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) seeks a new Research Manager for the Section of Freshwater Ecology. NIVA is Norway’s main research institute dedicated to our common water resources and their ecosystems.

The Section for Freshwater Ecology consists of 23 dedicated and competent employees working on topics such as biodiversity, climate change, restoration, nature-based solutions, new research/monitoring methods, red-listed and invasive species, eutrophication, algal blooms, habitats and land use. The section continuously conducts research to obtain new knowledge that helps to move the research front, and then uses this knowledge to provide state-of-the-art advice to authorities, business and industry.

The aim is to find sustainable solutions that can meet current and future environmental and societal challenges, both nationally and internationally. This requires interdisciplinary work and close cooperation with customers and stakeholders.

NIVA currently has 15 research sections, each with 10-25 researchers, research assistants, engineers and PhD students. The research manager reports directly to one of NIVA's Research Directors and is part of the institute’s operational management team.

Main tasks

As head of a research section at NIVA, you will be an important contributor to further developing the institute and ensuring that our research and consulting is relevant, knowledge-based, with integrity and high quality. Good interaction is important to find good solutions across professional and organizational boundaries, with external partners as well as internally with your colleagues.

You will contribute to the development and implementation of research strategies, as well as further positioning of the institute in relation to the section's core research areas. You should have good contact with the market, including national and international research programs, authorities and the business sector, and will have the overall responsibility for costumer contact, profiling, acquistion and revenues. Another important area of responsibility is to ensure the section's research development and innovation, including the application of the knowledge developed.

The research manager is also responsible for the section's personnel, competence development, HSE, and project and quality management. We emphasise that you are a good role model and cultural developer who contributes actively to the working environment.

You will also be able to make your own professional competence available in relevant projects.

Qualifications and experiences

We are primarily looking for a leader with a PhD in research areas related to freshwater ecology/limnology, with emphasis on one or more of the section's working areas, such as aquatic biodiversity, restoration/nature-based solutions, climate change (effects, measures, adaptation), new methods for use in monitoring, eutrophication or algae blooms.

In addition, the right candidate has good leadership skills and relevant management experience from research-related organizations.

We would like to emphasize that you have:

  • Broad experience from applying for and leading research projects nationally and/or internationally within the section's primary subject and market areas.
  • Broad national and international network and good market overview in freshwater ecology, preferably also within restoration/nature-based solutions, biodiversity, climate adaptation and/or new methods
  • Experience from restoration, monitoring and action plans for regional or national authorities is an advantage
  • Relevant knowledge about research funding, particularly the Norwegian Research Council's programmes and the EU.
  • At least 3-5 years of management experience from similar activities/applied research
  • Broad experience with project management
  • Good publishing rate, experience from disseminating research and representing the organization.

Excellent written and oral skills in English are a prerequisite, preferably also in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.
