At the Music Conservatory, part of the Arctic University Museum of Norway and the Academy of Fine Arts at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, there is a vacant position as a PhD Fellow in artistic research. The position will be affiliated with MishMash, a national centre for artificial intelligence funded by the Research Council of Norway, in which the Conservatory of Music is a partner.The position is for a period of three years. During the fellowship period, the candidate is expected to develop and carry out an independent artistic project exploring artificial intelligence and creativity.Admission to the PhD programme in Artistic Research at the University of Bergen is a prerequisite for employment, and the study period begins upon commencement of the position. The PhD Fellow is expected to participate in the National Research School for Artistic Research, as well as MishMash network meetings and PhD courses.The workplace is UiT in Tromsø. The appointed candidate must be able to take up the position no later than six months after receiving the offer of employment. A starting date in early autumn 2026 is preferred.
Research Area
Applicants must connect their project to one or more of the research questions addressed within MishMash Work Package 5: AI in the Creative and Cultural Industries.Projects that artistically explore ethical and intellectual property issues related to dataset training and the creation of art using AI tools are particularly relevant.Other possible research topics include artistic exploration of how AI affects creative processes, audience engagement with art, AI from a diversity perspective, or how nature and the environment are impacted by such artistic processes.Opportunities for collaboration with other MishMash work packages will be considered an advantage.
The position is open with regard to artistic practice. Music, theatre, film, other media, and transmedial projects are considered relevant.
The applicants must present a 3-5 page description outlining the academic basis of the PhD project. It must include a description of the topic, research question(s)and a reasoning of the choices. It should alsoindicatethe methodologies to be used. The final project description will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor.

Qualifications
Applicants must have:
Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Composition/Performing Music/Arts/Design, totaling a minimum of 5 years. The degree must be completed by the application deadline. Equivalent competence may, in exceptional cases, be assessed in accordance with the Norwegian Qualifications Framework, Level 7.
Documented artistic practice at an international level and experience in the use of AI tools. Competence in developing one’s own tools is an advantage, but not a requirement.
Documented English proficiency.

Proficiency in Sami, Norwegian, or another Scandinavian language is considered an advantage. The applicant’s research potential, personal suitability, and motivation will be emphasized. Documented ability to collaborate will be considered positively.

All documentation to be considered must be in a Scandinavian language or English. Diplomas and transcripts must also be submitted in the original language, if not in English or Scandinavian. PhD Fellows are normally given a salary of 550 800 NOK/year with a 3% yearly increase
Norwegian health policy aims to ensure that everyone, irrespective of their personal finances and where they live, has access to good health and care services of equal standard. As an employee you will become member of the National Insurance Scheme which also include health care services.
The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position. A copy of the assessment report will be sent to all applicants.
The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the PhD Fellow has already completed parts of their research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position PhD Fellow, research assistant, or the like in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.
