The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. Job description

ONE PART TIME (50%) POSITION AS RESEARCHER / DEVELOPER FOR AUTOMATION OF NEURODATA STANDARDIZATION is available at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine, for a period of 1 year, with possibility for extension. The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences consists of academic departments and units that pursue research and education within basic medical science. The institute has approximately 350 employees, located in the Domus Medica building. More information about the institute can be found here: www.med.uio.no/imb/english/.

The standardization researcher will work in a multidisciplinary environment at the Neural Systems laboratory (NeSys). The laboratory has a leading role in the Data Services of the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure - the European distributed research infrastructure for brain and brain-inspired research (https://ebrains.eu). The position is related to workflow development and pilot analyses carried out as part of the UiO Hub-Node project SHAREbrain and the EU-funded EBRAINS 2.0 project. 

EBRAINS Data Services aim to become the primary research infrastructure services for sharing, integrating, and analysing diverse and multiscale neuroscience data from the broader global research community, particularly in Europe. EBRAINS was included in the European roadmap of research infrastructures (ESFRI) in 2021. 

In the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure, the Neural Systems Laboratory (www.med.uio.no/nesys) is responsible for 1) creating new standards for brain atlases through development and maintenance of resources and tools for atlas-based integration and analysis of experimental rodent brain data, and 2) providing services for FAIR neuroscience data and data processing. 

The standardization researcher will primarily be part of the UiO team for neuroscience data life cycle management and data processing. The position should be filled as soon as possible.

More about the position

The standardization researcher to be employed will have specific responsibilities for improving the EBRAINS data curation process by: 

  • Contributing to adapting, optimizing and automating procedures for standardizing the organization and description of data and metadata from experimental functional neuroscience (electrophysiology and two-photon imaging) 
  • Contributing to extending and refining the openMINDS metadata models (https://ebrains.eu/data-tools-services/data-knowledge/share-data/fair-data-and-openminds)
  • Contributing to use-case demonstration of integration and analysis of experimental functional neuroscience data
  • Supporting and training researchers in the use of the workflow
  • Contributing to communication and dissemination about the workflow 

Qualification requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated and competent researcher with relevant experiences, with a PhD degree in 

Computational science, and relevant practical experience with analysis and modelling of complex neuroscience experimental data, who enjoys working in an international and interactive environment. Candidates must have extensive experience with:

  • Programming (including MATLAB) and computational modelling
  • Machine Learning (ML) methodology applied for complex data analysis in neuroscience 
  • Experience with science communication and teaching
  • Fluent verbal and written academic communication skills in English 

Selection criteria

The successful candidate will be a good team player with excellent coding skills, positive and pro-active attitude, and good abilities for team-based software development. Experience in working in interdisciplinary academic and / or multicultural / multidisciplinary environment is an advantage. Experience with handling of sensitive data is an additional advantage.
