About the position

Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University, Norway, invites applications from outstanding candidates for a three-year (or four-year) PhD position in Beneficial Health Effects of Macroalgae. With the current rise of non-communicable metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders, it is urgent to identify novel dietary sources for potential pharmacological applications. This PhD project mainly aims to establish the potential anti-obesity and neuroprotective effects of brown macroalgae. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in the characterization of bioactive compounds in macroalgae, the formulation of macroalgae-based diets, and feeding trials in an animal model as part of the academic division Animal Science, Production and Welfare.

The contract will be for a 3-year period, or a 4-year period with a 25% career-promoting activities.

The position is to be located in Steinkjer.

Qualifications and requirements

  • A completed master’s degree (or equivalent) graded B or higher that meets the admission requirements for the Ph.D. programme in Biosciences at Nord University. Relevant academic backgrounds include experimental animal nutrition, experimental animal physiology, veterinary science, biotechnology, or other closely related disciplines.
  • For the position, good English skills are required both written and oral. The thesis can be written in English or Norwegian (or a Scandinavian language)

Desirable:

  • Research experience in alternative nutrition
  • Experience in conducting feeding trials in animals
  • Knowledge of macroalgal biology
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

Candidates who already have a PhD degree will not be considered for the position.

  • Theme and perspectives from the applicant’s master’s study. Project outline with description of project idea and plan for implementation
  • The applicant’s description of motivation for the doctoral work and opportunities for completion
  • Relevant experience from research work
  • Ability to work independently, goal-oriented and systematically
  • Personal suitability
