Interested in synergizing and harnessing the multi-aspect of remote sensing using AI methods?

About the position

A PhD opportunity in Multi-Aspect Remote Sensing and Innovative AI methods for Land Resource Mapping and Monitoring is available at the Department of Geomatics at the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The PhD position is for a period of 3 years.

Desired start date: 01.08.2025

The diversity and volume of remotely sensed data are rapidly increasing, with an expanding variety of sensor and platform types, higher temporal frequencies, and varying spatial scales. These developments present both opportunities and challenges in the use of remote sensing for effective mapping, monitoring and management of land resources such as forestry, agriculture, rangelands, wetlands, and urban environments. Although the diverse and frequent data provide great opportunities, the complexity that comes with diverse and big data present methodological challenges in harnessing those opportunities. Likewise artificial intelligence (AI) methods are expanding and deepening their areas of applications offering potentially diverse and impactful solutions.

The successful candidate will work towards harnessing the multi-aspect of remote sensing through innovative AI techniques to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of land resource mapping and monitoring. Possible areas of research can be innovative use of AI for fusion of multi-source remote sensing data (multiple sensors or platforms), satellite image timeseries analysis, integration of timeseries and multi-resolution, or similar cases. Possible application areas can be mapping and monitoring of forest resources, agricultural areas, urban environments, and/or wetlands.

The applicant must submit a project description and enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD contract period.

You will join the research efforts at the Department of Geomatics at NMBU and contribute to its development. As a student in the PhD Programme Science and Technology, you will work towards your doctoral thesis and earn your PhD upon successful defense of your thesis.
