IT Engineer at the Norwegian Centre for Space Weather

The position

Would you like to work with programming and IT operations in an international scientific environment? There is a vacancy for an IT Engineer at the Norwegian Centre for Space Weather (NOSWE), a dynamic small group with extensive collaboration within both UiT and internationally.

We seek for a person who has expertise in the operation of IT systems and programming, but who also has experience in website management. The position is initially for two years with intention for further extension if funding available.

Job description

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • NOSWE's IT infrastructure and development of new contents, products, and models using science data from diverse sources in real time utilizing Python and Matlab, and
  • the seamless integration of NOSWE’s products into external systems and external products into NOSWE’s architecture.

The candidate will be responsible for maintenance through monitoring and error correction both with NOSWE’s servers and the website content with its user interfaces. The website is currently operating on a Wordpress platform.

The development of new products will require working closely with the scientific staff and coordinating with TGO’s engineers in order to ensure smooth workflow and functionality. Good co-operation skills are therefore important for the candidate to work in the unit.

Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate acquires basic knowledge of space weather.

Affiliation

The Norwegian Centre for Space Weather (NOSWE) is a semi-independent unit under Tromsø Geophysical Observatory (TGO) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. NOSWE is one of the major space weather service providers in Norway, currently operating mainly in the field of geomagnetism. NOSWE operates a popular website with space weather products developed from TGO’s data and from external providers.

NOSWE has been endorsed as the regional space weather warning centre in Norway, and acts as the contact point for, most importantly, government directorates and industries in issues concerning space weather, but also for the general public with related questions.

Qualifications

The candidate should have at least a bachelor’s degree in IT engineering.

The candidate should have:

  • Experience/knowledge in server operation and secure communication over the internet
  • ­Ability to read and implement mathematical algorithms into software
  • Experience/knowledge in Python
  • Experience/knowledge in Matlab
  • Experience/knowledge in Shell scripting
  • Experience/knowledge in Linux-based systems
  • Experience/knowledge in SSO access control
  • Experience/knowledge in Wordpress
  • Experience/knowledge in basic web design
  • Ability to document his/her work in IT and other areas
  • Good co-operative skills
  • Good command of English

In addition, the following will be considered beneficial:

  • Proficiency in the Norwegian language
  • Relevant scientific background (geophysics, space physics, space weather)

Conditions

We offer flexible working hours, a state collective pay agreement, and pension scheme through the state pension fund.

Remuneration the engineer position are in salary code 1085 or 1087 on the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, depending on qualifications. There is a 2% deduction for contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
