With about 17,500 students, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest higher education institutions in Norway. A broad range of academic programmes are offered at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels, spread out on five campuses Førde, Sogndal, Bergen, Stord og Haugesund.
Our ambition is to build stronger and more solid academic and research environments that will interact nationally and internationally. The aim is to become a recognized actor on the international higher education arena. Increased international cooperation and engagement in externally funded projects will work towards this goal.
The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (FØS) has three departments: the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Maritime Studies and the Department of Social Sciences. The academic staff at the faculty has about 140 employees, in total, there are about 2780 students on the three campuses: Bergen, Haugesund and Sogndal.
The faculty currently has eleven bachelor's programs and four master's programs. The faculty has a doctoral program in nautical operations which is a joint degree with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Norwegian Arctic University (UiT) and the University of Southeast Norway (USN). FØS is also the host faculty for the doctoral program "Responsible Innovation and Regional Development" (RESINNREG) in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. The Department of Maritime Studies (IMS) has educations at bachelor's, master's and PhD levels and a strong and active research environment.
We have 25 permanent employees and 9 PhD students from different nations and collaborate with universities and research institutes nationally and internationally.
The Department of Maritime Studies is located in Haugesund. The research activity in the department is mainly linked to the MarSafe research program. The researchers at MarSafe work closely with the industry, and focus on risk and safety in the maritime industry, with the main focus on organizational and operational aspects related to risk and safety management.
The Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering at Høgskulen på Vestlandet (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences - HVL), opens a position for a research fellow in Nanofluid Heat Transfer for a period of 3 years
About the Ph.D. project:
The project focuses on liquid films formed by nanofluids on heated surfaces. The project will consider cases when heating from the surface is supplemented by external thermal and magnetic radiation sources. For this purpose, the Ph.D. candidate will synthesize magnetic nanofluids and characterize their thermophysical properties. The central part of the project aims at flow experiments with thin films of nanofluids. The experiments will consider how heat- and mass transfer in the films depend on the properties of nanofluids and the abovementioned external factors. The project's overall goal is to develop empirical correlations for heat- and mass transfer in photomagnetic liquid films.
The project will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Bergen (UoB), Department of Physics and Technology. The Ph.D. study program will be allocated at the UoB. The Ph.D. research fellow will closely collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students working in this direction during the experiments.
Research environment
The Ph.D. project is allocated to the Nanofluid research group at HVL. The group conducts experimental and computational studies to facilitate the industrial uptake of smart fluids: nanofluids, ionic liquids, and phase change materials. The following research directions are within our competence area: photothermal boiling of nanofluids, nanofluid-based direct absorption solar collectors, nanofluids as coolants in engines and geothermal systems, ionic liquids in batteries, erosion in nanofluids, fluid dynamics of ice slurries. The group has access to analytical equipment and experimental systems used in this project.
Ph.D. research fellows receive annual work expense funding, which can be used for conference participation, research visits, and equipment. The place of employment is Campus Bergen, the university's largest campus. The campus has modern facilities and active student life, including a student pub. The Student Society in Bergen (Sammen), which our university collaborates with, provides student housing and access to sports facilities at favorable prices.
Qualifications:
Formal requirements:
Master’s degree in fluid dynamics, thermal physics, nanotechnology, or a closely related field.
MSc thesis (or equivalent research) includes experimental methods in the desired fields of expertise
The master’s thesis grade is equivalent to grade B or better on the ECTS grading system.
The average grade on coursework is equivalent to grade B or better in the master-level study on the ECTS grading system.
Documented proficiency in English (see the link below)
To qualify for admission to the Ph.D. program at the University of Bergen, the candidate must meet the formal requirements.
Candidates who will submit a master’s thesis (but have not yet been awarded a master’s degree) may also qualify for the position, provided the master’s degree is awarded within the 31st of December 2023. The outline of the master’s thesis must, in this case, be explained clearly in the application letter or an extra attachment.
Candidates already holding a Ph.D. within this field are not eligible for this position. Western Norway University of Applied Sciences is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation might be applied in the processing of the applications.
Additional qualifications for ranking:
A solid background in one or more of the following topics will be considered when candidates are ranked (in order of importance);
(1) nanofluids,
(2) data acquisition (e.g. Labview),
(3) flow experiments,
(4) experimental uncertainties,
(5) image processing. In addition to the required educational and scientific background, the following criteria will be evaluated (not in order of importance):
(6) competence and grades on relevant completed course work,
(7) publications & conference reports (if any),
(8) work experience in above-mentioned topics 1-5.
Personal qualifications
The candidate must be diligent and be able to work independently, supplemented with regular guidance, and is expected to carry out high-quality research and publish the results in international workshops, conferences, and journals. In addition, the candidate must be solution-oriented.
An application for enrolment to the Ph.D. studies should be submitted after an appointment is made, and the supervisor(s) will help with this procedure. The candidate must be enrolled as a Ph.D. student within three months of employment.
Application procedure:
Applications will be evaluated by an expert panel of three members.
Applicants are asked to submit their application and CV online. Please use the link “Apply for this job” (“Søk stillingen”).
