Department of Maritime Studies (IMS) has educations on bachelor-, master- and PhD-level with a strong and active research environment. We have 23 permanent employees from different nations and collaborations with other universities both nationally and abroad. The department of Maritime Studies is located in Haugesund.


The research activity in the department is mainly linked to the research program MarSafe and the research center MarCATCH. The researchers in MarSafe and MarCATCH collaborates close with the industry, and have focus on the risk and safety in the maritime industry, with the aim on organisational and operational aspects in relation to risk and safety management.

About the position:Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Business Administration and Social Sciences (FØS) has one available PhD position within Maritime ICT and cyber security. The position is 100 % for 4 years (including 25% teaching duty). The PhD student will be part of the maritime safety research group (MarSafe) at the department of maritime studies. Place of employment is Haugesund, Norway. The PhD-student will apply for admission in the PhD programme in Nautical Operations. This unique Ph.D. Programme in Nautical Operations is a joint degree between the four institutions educating ship officers at a university level in Norway; University of South-Eastern Norway, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norwegian University of Science and Technology and UiT The Arctic University of Norway. This Ph.D. position addresses ICT (information and communication technology) and cyber security unmet needs in the maritime domain. There is a particular emphasis on the human role and perspective of the usage, protection and maintenance of operational IT systems. Research projects in this area can be user centered or focusing on innovating new technical solutions to assist users within complex working environments.

About the PhD project/work tasks:

  • Plan and conduct research, applying relevant methods within quantitative and qualitative studies, assess and analyse data, interpret and form conclusions
  • Write scientific manuscripts for conferences and peer-reviewed journals
  • Apply for admission to and participate in the PhD program in Nautical Operations
  • Participate actively in the MarSafe research group
  • Travel may be required
  • 25 % teaching duties in relevant courses

Qualifications:

  • Relevant MSc Degree within Computer Science, Software Engineering or other relevant topics
  • Experience with experimental study design, planning and performance, skilled in quantitative methods and preferably have knowledge of qualitative methods
  • Documented qualifications in the English language as per requirements for Norwegian Higher Education

Wanted qualifications:

  • Seafaring experience is a benefit
  • Research experience in industries within safety critical domains is an advantage
  • Experience and/or interest in human factors, HCD, HMI and human performance is a plus
  • Candidates with no maritime operative background may also apply if they have a demonstrated record in cyber security or human factors (publications or industry experience)
  • It is expected that the person hired will achieve good enough Norwegian skills to be able to communicate with colleagues and students in Norwegian

Personal skills:

  • Ability to work alone, in small and large groups, among multiple discipline experts
  • Good communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Interest for teaching and supervision of students
  • Strong motivation for completing the PhD in the given timeline (2020-2024) and contributing to research within the maritime field

The PhD research fellow should have a master's degree in (or closely related to) systems engineering, software engineering, computer science, computing or information and communication technologies.

In addition to the required educational background, the following criteria will be evaluated: competence and grades on completed course work, quality of the master's thesis (excellent grade, equivalent of grade B or better on the ECTS grading system), publications (if any), communication skills, research and teaching experience, practical software engineering skills and experience.

The candidate must be diligent and display the ability to work independently, supplemented with regular guidance, and is expected to carry out high-quality research and to publish the results in national seminars, international workshops, conferences, and journals.

The PhD research fellow must enroll in the PhD programme in Nautical Operations at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, and must meet the formal admission requirements for this PhD programme.

The PhD candidate will be assigned two academic supervisors, one from Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and one from the joint PhD program in nautical operations. The candidate must be enrolled as a PhD student in the Nautical Operations program within 3 months from the start of the employment.
