PhD research fellowship - Variability in responses to endurance exercise training in untrained and trained individuals

About the position

The Faculty of Social and Health Sciences at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (INN) invites applications for a PhD research fellowship. The place of work is Lillehammer. The period of the fellowship is four years. The fellowship involves mandatory work amounting to 25% distributed over the period of employment, with teaching and supervision at Section for Health and Exercise Physiology as central tasks. The academic and research community supporting the doctoral programme with supervision and research training comprises a number of professors and associate professors working in the relevant academic fields, and the successful candidate will become a member of the “Trainome” research group.

Candidates must qualify for admission to the university’s PhD programme, and the doctoral education is carried out within this programme. Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

About the doctoral project

The PhD position's overall research focus is exercise physiology within sports sciences. The project will constitute endurance exercise training interventions, with collection of performance and health data from endurance trained and untrained participants.

Lifestyle therapy with exercise is central to preventing and treating key health challenges in today's society. Unfortunately, the effects of such therapy vary greatly between individuals. Many people do not experience the expected beneficial effects on key health determinants such as metabolic and muscle mass - function (they are low responders), even after long-term treatment. We know little about the underlying causes, their relationship to the internal physiological milieu, genotype, phenotype, environmental factors and exercise characteristics. The main goal of this PhD project is to explore the variability between and within individuals in response to endurance exercise training.
