The Department of Pharmacy has 130 employees. We have an active research and innovation environment based on independent research in pharmaceutical topics. The Department of Pharmacy is responsible for the popular master's degree program in pharmacy and has 350 competent and committed students.

Pharmaceutical related research and education forms the base of all activities at the Department of Pharmacy. The science of pharmacy lies in the interface between the natural sciences, pharmaceutical technology, health related topics and social sciences. This interdisciplinarity is reflected both in our study programmes and in our research.


In the planned life science building at the University of Oslo, closer collaboration with health enterprises, local government and the business sector will enhance quality and relevance in research and education of the future labour force. The building will be the heart of the first innovation district in Norway – Oslo Science City. The Department of Pharmacy will move into the new Life Science building in 2026.

About the Department and the position

A full time position as Associate Professor is available in the Section of Pharmaceutics and Social pharmacy at the Department of Pharmacy.

The Department of Pharmacy seeks a highly motivated, dynamic, collaboration orientated and innovative researcher to be part of the Pharmaceutics teaching and research environment.

The overall aim for the research in pharmaceutics is focused around the common two headings: ”Development of nano- and microstructured drug formulations" and "New formulation technologies for improved functionality in drug delivery”.

The cluster of pharmaceutical biotech industry and academia in the Oslo area is growing and the concept of Oslo Science City with the new Life Science building in progress is an important part of this development. The Department will move into the new Life Science building in 2026, where interdisciplinary collaborations and scientific convergence will be important. This will provide new opportunities for groundbreaking research and research of excellence.

The successful applicant is expected to contribute to strengthening the research in pharmaceutics as well as to promote interdisciplinary and international cooperation. The applicant will be highly encouraged to collaborate with one or more of the existing research groups in pharmaceutics. Other significant factors will include the ability to create an attractive research environment, experience in research supervision, international networking and originality in research.

She/he will have documented independent research experience after the PhD degree, scientific production in international peer review journals, teaching experience, and preferentially documented success in securing external funding.

The section is responsible for courses in pharmaceutics at bachelor, master- and Ph.D. levels, including biopharmaceutics and production of non-sterile and sterile preparations.

The position will entail 50% teaching in various areas of pharmaceutics to pharmacy students at all levels, including lectures, lab-/group teaching and supervision. The candidate must be able to lead and initiate research-based teaching, supervise researchers, undertake duties in connection with examinations, and undertake administrative tasks as required by the prevailing regulations.

General information about the position

Applicants must document academic qualifications in their field, equivalent to an Associate professor position. The successful applicant must be able to teach at all levels and to supervise Master and PhD students.

The successful applicant may furthermore be required to take on other teaching duties and administrative tasks, by request from the Department or the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Qualification requirements

Required qualifications

  • The successful applicant must have a master’s degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • The successful applicant must have completed a PhD in pharmaceutics
  • Scientific qualifications will play a major role, and the main emphasis will be on the candidate’s scientific production from the last five years.
  • Pedagogical qualifications and teaching and supervision experience at all levels will be an important factor in the evaluation process and should be well documented in a teaching portfolio. The applicant should describe her/his qualifications in view of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) framework which includes:
    • Focus on student learning
    • A clear development over time
    • A researching approach
    • A collegial attitude and practice
  • The candidate must be able to teach in Norwegian or in another Scandinavian language.
  • The successful applicant must have fluent oral and written communication skills both in a Scandinavian language and in English.

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document sufficient teaching qualifications (minimum formal requirement is a 200 hrs pedagogical programme) will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be required to learn sufficient Norwegian within a two-year period, to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.

  • Experience with teaching of quality assurance systems in production of sterile and non-sterile formulations
  • Pedagogical qualifications beyond the required minimum
  • Independent teaching responsibility experience
  • Documented experience in research dissemination
  • Other qualifying activities such as innovation, patenting and research management
  • Documented administrative experience

  • Ability to create and contribute to a well-functioning, inclusive and productive research environment
  • Networking skills, ability to collaborate and conduct scientific leadership
  • Ability to cooperate and communicate well with other members of staff
  • Ability to enthusiastically communicate complex scientific topics to students, colleagues and the general public

  • Educational portfolio of 3–6 pages documenting educational competence and experience, including a reflection note in which your own teaching practice and view of learning is anchored in the SoTL framework (focus on student learning, development over time, a researching approach and a collegial attitude and practice)
  • List of reference persons: 2–3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)
