Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM) was established in 2008 and is the Norwegian node in the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. NCMM is a joint venture between the University of Oslo, Health Region South-East and the Research Council of Norway. From 2017 NCMM is merged with the Biotechnology Centre of Oslo and now has altogether 11 research groups. The overall objective of NCMM is to conduct cutting edge research in molecular medicine and biotechnology as well as facilitate translation of discoveries in basic medical research into clinical practice.

Job description

A 1-year Researcher position is available in the Computational Oncology Group at the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM), Nordic EMBL Partnership, University of Oslo (see waszaklab.org for further information). The desired starting date is 1 January 2023.

The project aims to derive biomarkers from digital tissue slides based on state-of-the-art deep learning approaches and to develop an automated pipeline for clinical-decision support. The selected candidate will analyse a large set of digital tissue slides from brain tumour patients and extract biological features using computer vision, deep learning, and software programming. The candidate will further develop a containerised digital pathology pipeline for clinical-decision support.

We seek a highly motivated individual with experience in computer vision (ie, image segmentation) and machine learning (eg, convolutional neural networks). The ideal candidate is collaborative, has strong programming skills (Python, C/C++, or Matlab), has experience in statistical modelling of high-dimensional and large datasets, and has a strong publication record. Experience with computer vision and deep learning software libraries is a requirement for this position (eg, fastai, PyTorch, TensorFlow). Experience in digital pathology, neuroscience, or cancer research is highly desirable. The position is open to applicants with a PhD in computer science, physics, statistics, or a related field.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD in computer science, physics, statistics, or a related field
  • proficient in programming with Python, C/C++, or Matlab
  • proficient with deep learning and computer vision libraries (eg, fastai, PyTorch, TensorFlow)
  • experience in computer vision and machine learning is required (eg, image segmentation, convolutional neural networks)
  • experience in statistical modelling of high-dimensional data is required
  • experience in high-performance computing is required
  • experience in digital pathology, neuroscience, or cancer research is desirable
  • experience in container workflow development is desirable (eg, Docker, Singularity)
  • fluent oral and written communication skills in English
