The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is Norway's leading research institute for the aquatic environment, working across a wide range of environmental, climate and resource issues. Our high-quality research is characterised by its relevance, and its holistic and interdisciplinary approach, combining research with monitoring, assessment, problem solving and consulting. The NIVA group has approximately 500 employees and is headquartered in Oslo, with branches in Bergen, Grimstad, Hamar and Copenhagen, together with a marine research station in Drøbak, and subsidiaries in Tromsø, Chile and China.
NIVA is looking for a researcher in the field of process-based modelling of natural systems in the catchment-lake-coast continuum. The candidate will join the section for Catchment biogeochemistry, consisting of 15 researchers focusing on transport and cycling of nutrients, carbon and contaminants in catchments, lakes, rivers and coastal areas. The section develops, maintains and applies NIVA’s state-of-the-art Mobius model development platform. Modelling is a crosscutting theme between several of NIVA’s science groups and the chosen candidate will be included in a strong interdisciplinary team.
The workplace will be NIVA’s main office in Oslo (with possibilities to move to one of the regional offices after 1-2 years).
Responsibilities
Use process-based physical and biogeochemical models to describe and predict the impacts of changes in climate, land use and land management on catchment processes, riverine element transport, lake biogeochemistry and ecology, and coastal systems
Contribute to and develop NIVA’s Mobius modelling platform
Spatial analysis, databasing and statistical analyses
Participate in national and international research projects and contribute towards project acquisition
Reporting of project activity, including written and oral presentations in English and/or Norwegian to a range of audiences
Qualifications
MSc and/or PhD in relevant discipline
Competence and strong expertise in the use of process-based models of aquatic systems, including catchments, lakes, rivers and/or coastal areas
Strong coding skills (e.g. in Python)
Well-qualified in English (written and oral)
Advantageous:
Knowledge and experience in biogeochemistry (carbon, nutrients, contaminants in catchments, lakes, rivers, and/or coast)
Interest in mathematical modeling and development of process-based models
Experience in statistics and algorithms for conducting model sensitivity and uncertainty analyses
Spatial analysis (e.g. geopandas, ArcGIS) and databasing (e.g. SQL)
Experience in project management
Experience with interdisciplinary working
Mastery of a Scandinavian language (written and oral)
Personal abilities
We are looking for an enthusiastic, outgoing and positive colleague that can manage several tasks simultaneously in a structured way. Our new colleague will work in several Norwegian and/or international projects and it is important that you are prepared to work as part of a team.
