Researcher

There is a vacancy for a researcher (code 1108) at the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism (DIPA) at the Department of Government, University of Bergen, Norway. The position is 80% for a fixed-term period of 15 months. 

The position will provide the opportunity to gain insight into scientific work and methodology by working for an experienced PI and to be a team member in an ambitious research team of young researchers. The candidate´s work task will be related to ongoing research projects in collaboration with PI for the projects Professor Marit Skivenes, and especially collecting legal data from countries in all continents, as well as work with collected data at the DIPA-Centre. Working place will be Christies gate 17, 5007 Bergen.

Job description:

Will include tasks related to work with: 

  • Coding of legal and qualitative data material. 
  • Administer practicalities with data collection.
  • Communicate with legal experts in different legal systems.
  • Practical tasks associated with research projects. 
  • Collecting numerical and statistical material. 
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses. 
  • Assist with organizing conferences and seminars. 
  • Conduct literature searches. 
  • Other administrative tasks. 

Requirements and personal qualities:

  • A master’s degree in law. 
  • It is a prerequisite that the person being employed can demonstrate good knowledge and understanding of social science methodology.
  • Good skills in qualitative method and Nvivo program (or the equivalent) is a positive factor. 
  • Excellent language skills in English, both oral and written, is required. 
  • Knowledge other languages including Norwegian is a plus.
  • Good administrative IT skills are necessary. 
  • Good academic results are emphasized. 
  • Ability to work systematically and results-oriented is important. 
  • Good cooperation and communication skills are required. 
  • High work capacity is expected. 
  • Strong motivation for the research areas of the DIPA center is a plus, see overview of projects at DIPA webpage: https://discretion.uib.no/projects/ 
  • Experience working on research projects is a plus. 
  • Ambition to pursue a doctoral degree is required.
