The Norwegian Veterinary Institute is a research institute in the areas of animal health, fish health and food and feed safety, whose primary function is supply of research-based knowledge support to the authorities.

NVI have a free and independent position in all academic questions. As the authorities' main advisor in topics related to prevention, handling and elimination of zoonosis and serious infectious diseases in fish and land animals, NVI performs an important task to the Norwegian society. NVI also assists in the prevention and management of crises caused by hazardous compounds and contaminants in feed and food.

We provide services and advice to the industry, professionals and pet owners. The institute’s headquarters are located in Ås, but NVI is present throughout Norway with 5 regional laboratories in Sandnes, Bergen, Trondheim, Harstad and Tromsø.

The Norwegian Veterinary Institute has a strong focus on animal health and food safety, which includes monitoring, prevention and eradication of diseases and other health problems in animals. In order to accomplish this, data from many sources, such as for instance animal production data, laboratory data and environmental data are combined and analysed. The amounts of data that are being analysed is increasing, and the Institute is currently in the process of upscaling and transforming its data analysis processes. 

We are now looking for a data scientist in a six-month position, starting in July 2024.

The position is located within the section for Epidemiology, which currently employs around 30 researchers within the fields of epidemiology, disease transmission modelling, risk assessment, biostatistics and bioinformatics. The section has a large and international project portfolio, and provides a research-focused environment with good opportunities for professional development and network building.

 The candidate must be able to start the position in July, due to partial project deliverables already in September.

Work assignments

  • Prepare data in a research project about cleaner fish in salmonid aquaculture
  • Establish a data simulation environment
  • Develop code for simulations based on pre-existing models
  • Help the principal investigator with making presentations and visualisation of project results
  • Participating in writing a scientific paper based on the simulations
  • Start developing generic model functions and a framework suitable for simulations of different scenarios

Qualifications:

In order to be our perfect candidate you must have: 

  • MSc in data science or bioinformatics
  • Documented experience in analysis of aquaculture data
  • Documented experience of biological data analysis and research
  • Documented experience in advanced R programming
  • Documented experience with advanced data management, data quality control and data visualisation
  • Experience with version control
  • Good knowledge of Norwegian animal production
  • Good written and oral English, and the ability to write academic texts
