3-Year Researcher and Project Manager Position in Polar Seismology

Do you want to explore how climate change affects permafrost, glaciers, and ice sheets in polar regions? You will play a leading role in advancing our polar research, with access to unique datasets and state-of-the-art research infrastructure in both the Arctic and Antarctica.

NORSAR has an opening for a 3-year research position focused on advancing the field of polar seismology to better understand climate-change-related processes in polar regions. This role is designed for a PhD-level researcher with a background in seismology, geophysics, or other relevant fields of Earth sciences. The successful candidate will work with existing seismological datasets from the Arctic and Antarctica, employing cryoseismology to provide new insights into permafrost degradation, glacier dynamics, and ice sheet behaviour associated with climate change. 

NORSAR has well-developed seismic infrastructure in the Arctic, and starting in 2026, also in Antarctica through the national research infrastructure project Troll Observing Network (TONe). We also participate in other polar initiatives and networks. The researcher we hire will have a leading role in coordinating and developing NORSAR’s polar research activities. 

This is a three-year position, with potential for a permanent position.

Responsibilities:

  • Position NORSAR among the leading institutions in polar research.
  • Conduct high-impact research using seismological data to explore connections between climate change, permafrost degradation, glacier dynamics and associated seismicity (icequakes).
  • Develop and implement innovative seismological methodologies to advance the understanding of polar processes and climate impacts.
  • Identify funding opportunities and prepare compelling proposals.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations both within the institution and with leading national and international experts in fields such as seismology, glaciology, and climate science.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences

Required qualifications are:

  • PhD in seismology, geophysics, or other relevant fields of Earth sciences.
  • A strong publication record in relevant scientific fields.
  • Experience in seismic data analysis, including proficiency in computer systems and modern programming languages (e.g. Python, C/C++, shell scripting, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through experience in writing reports, publications, and presenting results. The ability to interact effectively with a team of interdisciplinary scientists is essential.
  • Experience in writing successful research proposals and building network of relevant external collaborators.
  • Proven leadership and organizational skills, with a track record of building or managing research teams (preferred but not required).

The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator with strong presentation abilities, able to work both collaboratively and independently. The candidate must be fluent in English, both written and spoken.
