About the position

Skatteforsk – Norwegian Centre for Tax Research, invites applications for a full-time, permanent position as Associate Professor in Economics with a focus on taxation and public economics. Skatteforsk is housed in the School of Economics and Business (Handelshøyskolen) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) The position is directly linked to Skatteforsk and reports to the Centre’s director, Professor Annette Alstadsæter. Expected start: Autumn 2026.

Skatteforsk is a world-class research centre that combines top-tier research with broad engagement in public policies and debates. Our globe-spanning team of over 100 researchers collaborates across eight work streams: (1) Data infrastructure & research ethics, (2) Financial activities, (3) Real Estate, (4) Taxation of multinationals & effects, (5) Inequality, (6) Climate change (7) Corporate and individual responses to taxation, and (8) Control and compliance through enforcement. We work closely with a wide range of top international institutions. Together with the EU Tax Observatory, we have co-led major international initiatives such as the Atlas of the Offshore World and the Global Tax Evasion Report 2024. Our activity spans academic publications, policy hearings, conferences, and workshops in Norway and abroad. We continuously engage in outreach activities to policymakers, media, and the public to ensure real-world impact from our research. This includes innovative dissemination via short films, non-academic festivals, collaborations with high schools, and more to reach wider audiences. The position offers access to a vibrant research environment and dedicated administrative support for events and dissemination. The centre currently has five administrative and 15 academic staff on campus. As a centre hosted by the School of Economics and Business, Skatteforsk is tightly integrated with the university and is a key part of its research and education. The new associate professor will therefore play a key role in teaching taxation-related courses and supervising PhD candidates funded through Skatteforsk. In addition, the successful candidate will support delivery on Skatteforsk’s currently funded projects and future external-funding bids.

Main tasks

  • Research: Produce internationally visible research in taxation and public economics. Publish regularly in peer reviewed outlets, with an ambition towards AJG 4/4* journals in economics.
  • Funding & collaboration: Contribute to the delivery of the outputs in Skatteforsk’s existing external grants, help develop projects under its umbrella, and take an active role in developing external funding applications.
  • Teaching & supervision: The position carries a normal teaching/supervision duty in line with School of Economics and Business expectations (undervisningsplikt).
  • Other tasks: Actively contribute to the Centre’s academic environment, by attending and presenting at seminars, mentoring juniors, and engaging in dissemination and outreach activities.

Competence

All qualifications below are required for the position, unless it is specified that they are considered an advantage. 

  1. Academic qualifications at a scientific level in accordance with established international or national standards

Required: 

  • Ph.D. in Economics (or related field).
  • Competence in one or several of the eight above workstreams 
  • Publications demonstrating expertise in tax-related issues, with an emphasis being put on the last five years (career breaks will be considered).
  • A credible research pipeline with potential for publications in top international journals within the Economics category of the CABS/AJG journal ranking, with Finance as a secondary field.
  • Experience with large datasets and use of advanced econometric methods.
  • Experience in disseminating research results to non-academic partners (e.g., tax administrations, private businesses, or journalists)
  • Strong command of written and verbal English, with excellent communication skills.
  • Personal suitability, including a collegial and solution-oriented attitude, strong collaboration skills, and motivation to contribute to the collective success of Skatteforsk.

Advantage: 

  • Experience in applying for large-scale external funding.
  • Experience with international research collaboration, interdisciplinary work, and externally funded projects.
  • Experience with sensitive or leaked data.
  • Commitment to standards for responsible research, including open science practices and GDPR compliance.
  • Familiarity with the Norwegian tax system. 
  • Written and verbal skills (minimum level B2) in Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish
  1. Educational qualifications

Required: 

  • Completed pedagogical education program at a minimum of 200 hours. Those who do not meet the pedagogical requirements at the time of employment are required to meet them within two years of employment.
  • Teaching and supervision experience at the bachelor’s or master’s level
  • B2 level proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Those who do not meet the language requirements at the time of employment shall be required to meet them within three years of employment.

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in position code 1011 Associate Professor (NOK 720.000 - 1.100.000) depending on qualifications. Seniority promotion in the position.
