The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.
About the position
The Hybrid Technology Hub Centre of Excellence at Oslo University Hospital and University of Oslo, Norway is currently accepting applications for a 2 year position as a laboratory engineer to work on stem cell derived organoids (100% position).
The Centre headed by Prof. Stefan Krauss is located at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences at University of Oslo, with partners at the University of Glasgow and Imperial College, London. The overall objective of the Centre is to develop innovative human 3D models (3D organoids and organ-on-chip systems) for experimental drug testing and animal testing replacement.
The laboratory engineer, funded by the research council of Norway, will participate in the development of advanced in vitro liver organoids for disease modelling and drug testing. The work will include culture and differentiation of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells, culture of 3D organoids, and culture of 3D organoids in a microfluidic platform under various conditions including drug testing. The laboratory engineer will also assist with RNA/DNA isolation, preparation of samples sequencing and ELISA.
Work tasks
Human stem cell culture and differentiation, including organoid/spheroid formation, culture of cells and organoids/spheroids in a microfluidic system
Assays, including drug testing, on organoids/spheroids
Molecular biology experiments including DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR, sample preparation for sequencing and ELISA
Contributing to the day-to-day running of the lab, including ordering system and cleaning routines
Maintaining excellent laboratory notebooks (manual and/or electronic) to document all aspects of the experimental work
Qualification requirements
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology or a similar subject is required. Real competence with relevance to the tasks in question can compensate for the education requirement. Furthermore, relevant practical work experience may be required.
Minimum of one-year laboratory experience is required
Experience with human or mouse cell culture is required
Experience with basic molecular biology is required
Experience with human stem cell culture and organoids is an advantage
Experience in flow cytometry is an advantage
Good knowledge in cell biology, developmental biology and histology is an advantage.
Fluency in Norwegian is not required but is considered an advantage

Team player
Fluent in both spoken and written English
Flexibility of working on weekends, (2-3 hours)
