TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture is a cross disciplinary unit at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Oslo. TIK is home to 40 staff members working in research, education and research communication in innovation and science and technology studies (STS). A major part of TIK’s activity is externally funded research. TIK also offers postgraduate education; a PhD-programme and two Master programmes. The Centre also hosts OSIRIS - Oslo Institute for Research on the Impact.

Job description

Applications are invited for a 3-year Research Fellowship as PhD Candidate (SKO 1017) to be based at TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture. The fellowship is part of the project “The Norwegian oil and gas supply industry in hard times: Innovation in global supply chains” (GLOBOIL). The project is part of the Norwegian Research Council’s PETROMAKS 2 programme.

The PhD candidate will be attached to TIK’s PhD programme option Technology, Innovation and Culture, which is part of the PhD programme of the Social Sciences faculty.


The GLOBOIL project will study how Norwegian upstream oil and gas suppliers are adapting their production strategy, supply chain architecture and innovative capabilities to the demands of recent developments in global manufacturing. During the 2000s, the offshore supply industry has become Norway’s largest export industry, after oil and gas. From the early 1990s, the Norwegian industry and its supporting institutions have based their strategy on an open business environment. However, in recent years, the industry has faced an intense pressure to reduce costs because of lower oil prices. At the same time, many oil-producing nations, have adopted protectionist policies aiming to capture or promote segments of the offshore supply chain within national boundaries (e.g. Brazil and the USA). The project will study questions as: What is Norwegian suppliers’ business strategy governing their production supply-chain in global markets? To what degree and in what way does taking part in technological challenging projects in key offshore markets abroad, affect the industry’s innovative capabilities in Norwegian-based projects? Are there barriers in form of path dependency, technological standards or other forms of institutional and socio-economic structures that prevent or promote certain kind of technology and contractual relations in the supply chain? In policy terms, is the current Norwegian institutional setting that previously nurtured the industry still relevant and effective? Theoretically, can the Norwegian example help us understand how states and multinational companies (MNC) global supply chains play a role in promoting economic development in general and industry upgrading in particular? Even though the main subject in the project are Norwegian suppliers and their international relations, there will be a particular strong focus on development in the Brazilian and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico offshore supply markets.

More about the position

The candidates’ work will be situated within the TIK’s research programs and she/he is expected on a daily base to take part in activities at the centre.In addition to his/her own research, candidates for three-year positions may be required to participate in teaching and/or administration activities connected to research and teaching at the Centre. It is also expected that candidates contribute actively to the popularization and dissemination of project findings. These activities are to be compensated with an equivalent extension of the fellowship. The total duration of the extension may not exceed twelve months.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. Qualification requirements

Applicants must hold a two years Master’s degree or equivalent in the social sciences or humanities and meet the requirements to be enrolled in the PhD-programme. An interest in technology, business development and policies related to international economoy will be an advantage.

In addition, the Ph.D. candidate must have

  • fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • extensive knowledge of Innovation Studies and the oil and gas industry
  • demonstrated research capabilities.
  • strong interest in the development of innovation research both theoretically and empirically.
  • knowledge of a Scandinavian language, in relation to fieldwork.

The candidate's proposal and the research profile, strategies and activities within the innovation programme at the center and the projects mentioned, will be given weight, along with the quality of the proposal and the qualifications of the candidate.
