University of South-Eastern Norway has about 18 000 students and about 1600 employees. The university is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses. The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as Doctoral Research Fellow in Human Aspects in Autonomous Systems in the maritime domain with commencement from 01.03.2019.

The position is attached to the Department of Maritime Operations and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is at the University’s Campus Vestfold.

Qualifications

Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in engineering, human factors or social sciences with grade B or better. The applicant must have gained the degree within the commencement date of the PhD project. Master students graduating this year may also apply.

Applicants must have an excellent command of written and spoken English.

Admission to the doctoral programme in Nautical Operation is a condition for appointment as Doctoral Research Fellow.

Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.

The candidate should have competency and interest in the following areas: human factors, autonomous systems, system dyanamics, competence framework, system modeling and simulation, training and assessment methods, computational tools, and knowledge of experimental design and research methods. In addition to formal qualifications, the candidate must have a personal motivation for research, ability to work independently and focused, ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.

Information about the position

The Doctoral Research Fellow will work within the Autostrip project which is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, program FORREGION pillar 2 “Kapasitetsløft” and supported by the counties Buskerud, Telemark and Vestfold.

The need of knowledge on autonomous systems is swiftly increasing and USN wishes through this project to answer this challenge and be at the forefront of this technological change. Autonomous and unmanned vehciles consist of interconnected systems. For complex systems that embed automation, but rely on human interaction for guidance and contingency management, holistic models are needed in order to provide an understanding and address critical interactions of such socio-technical systems. The goal of this project is to investigate, conceptualize and analyze the role of the human element in autonomous vessels.

The Doctoral Research Fellow will work within a dynamic, multidisciplinary project environment. The successful candidate will work within the Training and Assessment Research Group (TARG) at USN and be responsible for the design, testing and analysis of various training methodologies and technologies with human subjects.

Salary

The position is placed in the state salary scale 51 (code 1017, LR 20.alt. 9). Further promotion will be based on service in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 may be considered. Code 1378 is placed in the state salary scale at levels 50-68. A statutory contribution will be made from the employee’s salary to the state pension plan.
