About the position

The Faculty of Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as PhD Research Fellow in Spray characterization of oil droplets within the spring of 2019.

The position is at the Department of Process, Energy and Environmental Technology and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Porsgrunn, Norway.

Qualifications

Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in physics, process technology, chemical engineering or mechanical engineering. It is desirable that the candidate have strong academic knowledge within the field of combustion processes, optical measurement methods or image processing.

We are looking for a candidate that has published papers in international journals in the relevant field of research, has relevant laboratory or industry work experience. The applicant must have gained the degree within the application deadline.

It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Process, Energy and Automation Engineering.

Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.

Information about the position

The Research Fellow will work with droplet measurements in a large spray using a shadow imaging technique. Wärtsilä Moss AS is the industrial partner in the project.

Wärtsilä Moss AS delivers combined inert gas generators and gas combustion units for large LNG-carriers. The inert gas is used to ensure non-explosive atmosphere inside the tanks. Since the LNG is carried at cryogenic temperatures, a portion of the gas will boil off. This has to be done in a combustion unit. When the combined unit is used, a pilot flame is required to sustain the flame for the boil of gas.

This PhD project will work with a newly developed spray nozzle for the pilot flame. This is a twin-fluid atomization nozzle for diesel spray. The project is to characterize the spray in terms of droplet size distribution, velocity and other related parameters. The work will be performed with a recently purchased state-of-the-art LaVision shadow imaging system. The measurement method includes image processing of images from the spray. This can be performed in commercial software or in an in-house image processing code depending on the image quality.

The findings will be documented in international journals and the findings can benefit Wärtsilä in the making of the combined unit.

The appointment is for a term of three years with no teaching duties or four years with 25% teaching duties.
