The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.

Job description

A PhD fellowship in Neuroscience is available in the group of Associate Professor Koen Vervaeke: http://vervaeke-lab.org/. The lab is located at the Division of Physiology, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB), at the University of Oslo. The project is funded by an EEA grant. The position is fully funded for a period of 3 years and available from the 1st of September, 2020.

The IMB has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

More about the position

We are searching for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in cortical circuits and statistics. We aim at determining cortical circuit functions in behaving animals. The candidate will use state-of-the-art methods in computational statistics and machine learning to analyze large-scale neural data obtained by two-photon microscopy.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within 3 months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program. Qualification requirements

A Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent qualification in neuroscience, computer science, math, physics or engineering are encouraged to apply. minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS.

Ideally, the applicants have experience with analyzing large-scale neural data, machine learning and exploratory data analysis. The applicants should have good programming skills (eg. Matlab), be a critical thinker and team player. The candidate should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations. Applicants must hold an MSc or M.D. degree.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the relevance of the candidate’s background.

A good command of English is required.
