A full-time associate professor position is available in Bioanalytical Chemistry related to Life Sciences at the Department of Chemistry, Bio3-Section for Chemical Life Sciences.r).

We are looking for a potential scientific leader with clear research visions, educational and administrative skills and the abilities to establish/engage in multidisciplinary collaboration in life science research.

About the position

The right candidate will play a key role in expanding chemical life science research and education at UiO. The candidate will be expected to establish and develop expertise bridging bioanalytical chemistry and other life sciences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Development of novel concepts/instrumentation/columns in separation science and on-line sample preparation; Establishing concepts and methods for biomarker discovery/measurements in e.g. cancer; Metabolomics (targeted and untargeted); Lipidomics (targeted and untargeted); Organoid research.

We are looking for a team player in research, teaching and the collective working environment. It is essential that the candidate will be able to complement and interact tightly with colleagues within the Bio3 section and the Department of Chemistry. In 2024 the Department of Chemistry and the School of Pharmacy will both relocate in UiO’s new Life Science Building. The candidate is expected to develop further our successful research collaboration with the School of Pharmacy in this new environment.

Qualification requirements

  • The successful candidate must have a PhD-degree within chemistry and documented qualifications within bioanalytical chemistry (research and teaching). Examples include the use of miniaturized liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry for analyzing biosamples.
  • The research focus must be related to the Life Sciences.
  • It is required that the candidate has active collaborations in life science (both nationally and internationally), for example with medical research groups, and has experience in teaming with other fields of chemistry, e.g. polymer chemistry, quantum chemistry, inorganic/organic chemistry, etc.
  • It is required that the candidate has experience in obtaining external research grants, either as a single applicant or as a co-applicant.
  • The candidate must have teaching experience in bioanalytical chemistry and a demonstrated engagement in undergraduate and graduate education and in mentoring and advising master and doctoral students.
  • The candidate must be able to teach in Norwegian or in another Scandinavian language. Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two years subsequent to their appointment. Applicants who on appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of pedagogic qualification must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years.

Interviews will be used in the appointment process, and applicants may also be required to give a lecture of their research and a trial lecture for a Bachelor level course.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
