Stilling:

Postdoc in Data-Driven Modelling and Optimization

Application due: 15/03/2019

SINTEF

SINTEF is one of Europe's largest research organisations, with multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of technology, the natural sciences and the social sciences. SINTEF is an independent foundation and has conducted contract research and development projects for the private and public sectors since 1950. SINTEF has 2000 employees from 75 countries and annual revenues of three billion Norwegian kroner.

Vision: Technology for a better society.

SINTEF Digital conducts research and innovation in the areas of information and communication technology and technology-oriented social sciences. Our multidisciplinary knowledge base is used across all industries and helps our customers exploit and meet the opportunities created by today's omnipresent digital transformation.

SINTEF Digital is searching for a postdoctoral candidate for the project “Digital Subsurface: Flow Diagnostics and Data-Driven Modelling in Optimized Reservoir Management”.

The aim of the project is to develop new computational methods to prescreen large ensembles of geomodels or postprocess advanced multiphase reservoir simulations. The position is part of a knowledge-building project for industry funded by the Research Council of Norway and three oil companies (Equinor, Total, and Wintershall). The task of the postdoc is to develop new data-driven methods and optimization methodologies based on flowdiagnostics, a novel computational methodology for estimating connectivity and flow paths.

The position is affiliated with the Computational Geosciences group at the Department of Mathematics & Cybernetics. The group is world leading in its field, and is renowned for its open-source software, MRST and OPM, and for its contributions to the development of multiscale methods. As a postdoc, you will work in an internationally oriented environment and conduct high-quality academic research with a strong industry relevance.

The postdoctoral scholarship has a fixed end date on December 31, 2021, and we are searching for a person who can start as soon as possible. The scholarship also contains funds for a potential research visit of up to one year at the University of Tulsa.

Required background:

  • Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in applied mathematics or computational science. Candidates with a doctoral degree in petroleum engineering will only be considered if they can document a strong background in programming and development of computational methods.
  • Candidates who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are: TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test); IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted); CAE/CPE: grade B or A. (In extraordinary circumstances, formal documentation of language skills can be relinquished. In such cases, the candidate’s language skills will be assessed in a personal interview).

Preferred expertise and skills:

  • Relevant research experience and strong academic track record with publications
  • Modelling of subsurface flow
  • Optimization and/or uncertainty quantification
  • AI/machine learning
  • Expertise in C++, MATLAB, Python or other suitable languages
  • Experience from industrial or open-source software development is an advantage, particularly in MRST or OPM
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team

We offer:

  • Challenging applied research tasks relevant to industrial and societal challenges
  • A dynamic and innovative environment
  • Skilful, experienced, and creative research colleagues
  • Well-established national and international networks
  • Flexible working hours and a large degree of autonomy

Duration: until 31 December 2021

Location: SINTEF Digital’s offices in Oslo, Norway.
