Stilling:

PhD Research Fellowship in in Solid State Electrochemistry

Deadline 25.09.2018

University of Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) is an interdisciplinary focus field for material and energy research at the University of Oslo. SMN has focused on basic research in renewable energy and environmentally friendly use of fossil energy sources.

The center consists of research groups from the Department of Physics (Fi) and Chemistry (Ki), has about 100 employees from around the world and manages more than 80 projects funded by the EU, the RCN and others.

Job description

Position as PhD Research fellow available at Department of Chemistry/Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology.

Electrochemistry plays vital roles in sustainable energy conversion technologies. The present project, FUndamentals of Surface Kinetics in high temperature Electrochemistry (FUSKE), addresses the understanding of the kinetics of gas-solid reactions at the surface of electrodes and electrolytes of fuel cells and electrolysers and gas separation membranes, with the aim to develop fundamental mechanistic insight of the rate determining processes. The project is financed through the FRIPRO program of the Research Council of Norway.

In the FUSKE project an array of experimental and computational approaches will be implemented. These will include standard electrochemical characterization methodologies, use of mass spectroscopy, electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry and other spectroscopy based methodologies, and computational approaches (e.g. DFT and molecular dynamic simulations). The successful candidate will collaborate with members of other complementary projects in an international context. Some instrumental operation and maintenance tasks must be expected.

More about the position

The fellowship is for a period of up to 3 years. Starting date no later than 15.11.2018.

No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.
