Applications are invited for a 3 year PhD Research Fellow position at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, Department of Oncology in PROCCA.

PROCCA is a research environment within cancer therapy funded by University of Oslo (UiO) Life Science (https://www.uio.no/english/research/strategic-research-areas/life-science/) to promote interdisciplinary convergence. Norway will have its first proton therapy center in Oslo in 2023. In PROCCA, we will investigate how the physical properties of protons versus X-rays induce differential biological responses resulting in different short- and long-term normal tissue damage. Moreover, we will investigate how this lead to late effects in cancer survivors and affects physiological and psychological aspects of their quality of life. The convergence environment will employ 4 PhD students at the Department of Physics, Institute of oral biology, Institute of clinical medicine, and Department of Psychology, respectively. The 4 candidates will work in a highly translational field together with a multidisciplinary team consisting of physicists, biologists, immunologists, oral biologists, oncologists and psychologists.

More about the position

The present position is based at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, UiO and the Department of Oncology, Oslo University Hospital (OUH). The primary workplace for the PhD student will be at the section for head and neck oncology, Department of Oncology, OUH. The work will include participation in clinical evaluation of head and neck cancer survivors in an ongoing survivorship study, analyses of biomarkers in relation to late effects and radiation dose distribution mapping to explore possible gain in outcome from proton therapy.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree in Medicine. The fellowship requires admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo.

Qualification requirements

• The candidate must be a medical doctor, preferably with specialization in oncology and knowledge of radiotherapy.
• Clinical experience in treatment of patients with head and neck cancer and knowledge of proton therapy will be emphasized. In addition, strong interest in clinical research and late effects is an advantage.
• Fluency in Norwegian and English, both orally and in writing is required.

Personal skills

The candidate should have strong practical and analytical skills, good communication, and social and collaboration skills. Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary scientific environment is important.
