Stilling:

Researcher in catchment biogeochemistry

Deadline for application: 15/09/2018

Norwegian Institute for Water Research

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is Norway’s leading institute for basic and applied research on marine and freshwaters. The institute’s research comprises a wide array of environmental, climatic and resource-related fields. NIVA’s world-class expertise is multidisciplinary with a broad scientific scope. We combine research, monitoring, evaluation, problem-solving and advisory services at international, national and local levels.

The NIVA group has approximately 340 employees. NIVA´s head office is in Oslo with regional offices in Bergen, Grimstad, Hamar, Copenhagen and China, a research station at Drøbak (Oslofjord), as well as subsidiaries in Tromsø and Chile.

The position is connected to NIVA’s section for Catchment Processes. The section has catchment and lake biogeochemistry as its main field of interest, and uses environmental monitoring, experimental research and modelling as key tools to address interacting impacts of (transboundary) air pollution, land use (agriculture, forestry, urban) and climate on water quality. Statistical methods and process-based modeling are core to the section’s activity. Most projects focus on biogeochemical processes and cycles in the interface between land-freshwater-coast under changing environmental conditions, and are interdisciplinary through collaborations with aquatic biologists, marine biogeochemists and socio-economic scientists. The projects deliver results to support ecosystem-based management and environmental policy. The section is involved in national and international research projects, including several EU projects..

We are looking for a new enthusiastic colleague with a strong interest in water chemistry in semi-natural boreal and temperate catchments, and an understanding of long-term biogeochemical change, including acid-base chemistry, related to air pollution and climate.

Main tasks:

  • Secure, strengthen and develop NIVA’s expertise in the catchment-oriented water research
  • Participate in NIVA’s international and national projects regarding catchment biogeochemistry data analyses and applied modelling
  • Strengthen and develop NIVA’s expertise in data collection, data analyses and applied modelling of physical and biogeochemical processes in catchments, rivers and lakes
  • Generate new projects in interplay with colleagues, external partners and user-groups
  • Facilitate and support management of larger (multi-partner, collaborative) projects

Qualifications and experience:

You have a PhD degree in a relevant field within the natural sciences. You have a profound understanding of biochemical processes on soil-water interactions in semi-natural boreal and temperate catchments. Furthermore, you like to work with building, combining and analyzing large datasets and to publish results in scientific papers, in addition to policy-relevant forms of dissemination. You are interested in the application of new and established data analysis tools such as statistical and process-based models.

The successful candidate has experience with applied research and documented ability to obtain research funding. Furthermore, the candidate is interested in taking a coordinating role in order to successfully manage large, multi-partner collaborative projects on the science-policy interface. The candidate is motivated by being part of a team and has good communication skills. Excellent written and spoken English skills are expected and it is desirable with skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.

Personal abilities:

  • The ability to work analytically and structured – even under time pressure
  • Proficiency in communicating with collaborating partners, customers, users and research colleagues
  • The ability to work with a variety of tasks in co-operation with different project teams

NIVA offers:

  • Challenging and inspiring tasks at the leading national water research institute with a comprehensive international network of contacts
  • A head office at CIENS (The Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research) centrally located at the Oslo Science Park near the University of Oslo.
  • Stimulating, international work environment with highly skilled and dedicated employees.
  • Competitive conditions and salaries, pension plans and insurance benefits
