The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) holds a leading position in research on international politics and economy. NUPI søker en kandidat til en toårig stilling som postdoktor i prosjektet ADHOCISM, som vil undersøke effekten av ad hoc-koalisjoner på internasjonale organisasjoner innen internasjonal sikkerhet og helse.
NUPI is seeking a candidate for a two-year postdoc position for the Ad hoc crisis response and international organisations (ADHOCISM) project, funded by the Research Council of Norway. ADHOCISM will examine the impact of ad hoc coalitions on international organizations in international security and health.
Main tasks will be to take the lead in developing a dataset on ad hoc coalitions in international security and health; contribute to three articles on the dataset and a conceptual framework; and a case study on ad hoc security coalitions in Mali and the Sahel. The postdoc will be part of a highly qualified international team and be responsible for researching and contributing to three articles.
The candidate will be part of the Research Group on Peace, Conflict and Development and be based at NUPI in Oslo, Norway. Other partners in the ADHOCISM project are based at the European University Institute, Maastricht University and the University of Witwatersrand.
About the project
Most international organisations (IOs) are created with the aim of solving collective action problems. Yet, member states repeatedly establish ad hoc coalitions in situations where IOs would be expected to play a central role. Ad hoc coalitions are here understood as loose groups of actors that agree to solve a particular crisis at a given time and location outside of an existing IO in the same policy domain. Ad hoc coalitions can, in the short-term, lead to more rapid and effective crisis responses among like-minded states, but in the longer term they might also compete with IOs or even undermine IOs’ relevance and credibility. Surprisingly, this key characteristic of current global governance has so far attracted little attention. ADHOCISM wants to contribute to filling this gap through a systematic study of ad hoc crisis responses in two policy domains: security and health.
Qualifications and Selection Criteria
- PhD in international relations, political science or in a related field
- Experience with empirical research and quantitative methods
- Experience with developing and analysing datasets in R
- Publication record on international organisation and/or peace and conflict studies in peer-reviewed journals
- Experience with and willingness to conduct field work in conflict-affected areas
- Good communication, teamwork and networking skills
- Fluency in English; ability to read and speak French an advantage
- Self-reliant and creative
- A large interdisciplinary research community with strong international networks
- A young and vibrant work environment with frequent invited speakers and events
- Modern office facilities in central Oslo
- Salary based on qualifications, reflecting NUPI’s pay scale (salary scale 1109, from 604 700 NOK per year)
