About the position

The Faculty of Education and Arts/Center for Practical Knowledge (CPK), Nord University seeks three full-time professors primarily for the PhD programme Studies of Professional Praxis, but including responsibilities for the faculty’s masters programmes. The place of work for the position is Bodø or Levanger Campus, but the appointed persons may be expected to contribute to activity at the university’s other campuses.

Centre for Practical Knowledge


The Centre for Practical Knowledge (CPK) is organized as a division at the Faculty of Education and Arts. CPK is an interdisciplinary research and teaching unit whose faculty members have backgrounds in disciplines such as Philosophy, Anthropology, Pedagogy, Psychology, Sociology, and Artistic research.


CPK has established itself as a Nordic hub for research in Practical Knowledge and has several national and international research partners who are actively engaged in research on Practical Knowledge and Borderology. The major focus of CPK’s research profile is, and has been, the phenomenon of practice as well as the sources and development of practical knowledge.


CPK is responsible for the Master’s program in Practical Knowledge as well as the Joint Master program in Borderology (with Murmansk Arctic State University).

CPK has been of central importance in the development and maintenance of the PhD program in the study of Professional Praxis. Faculty members are also involved in other teaching and research projects at the Faculty of Education and Art as well as other faculties at Nord University.

The faculty is seeking candidates whose primary research interests lie in the fields such as teacher education, special needs education, classroom research, teacher thinking, teacher practices, teachers’ professional identity, and the role of the teacher profession in society. The disciplinary profile of the position is open and we welcome candidates with background within research into education at all levels (from kindergarten to upper secondary education) and teacher education, as well as background in scientific theory and research methods.

Applicant with research interests lie in the fields of Anthropology/Sociology with experience in field research, Literacy/Applied Linguistics, and Arts Research can also apply.

The successful candidate should be able to document relevant and high-quality research in one or more of the above-mentioned research areas, or in other areas relevant to the research profile of the faculty and the PhD programme.

Duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will have as his or her primary responsibilities:

  • Supervision of Masters and PhD students
  • Teaching at all levels
  • Initiating and developing interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with colleagues at the Faculty and at CPK
  • Facilitating research projects with national and international partners
  • Developing professions research from within the Practical Knowledge paradigm
  • Developing of the PhD in the Study of Professional Praxis in co-operation with colleagues at the Faculty

Qualification requirements

  • Appointment at the rank of professor will be based on documented research and teaching competence within one of the relevant discipline areas that meets international standards for such appointments.
  • The successful candidate, who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications, will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period. Nord University offers a course in University pedagogy (Uniped), the completion of which fulfils this stipulation.

Qualified applicants will be ranked according to the following criteria:

  • Publication record during the past five years
  • Quality and relevance of submitted published work
  • Pedagogical skills and teaching experience at bachelors, masters, and PhD levels
  • Experience of developing and implementing academic curricula
  • Experience initiating projects, as well as the coordination and supervision of research groups and individual researchers
  • Experience in international research and contact with an international research network
  • Experience in work on grants applications and the attainment of external funding
  • Cooperation, organizational and administrative skills and experience

Research activity during the previous five years, as well as pedagogical experience and personal qualities that can contribute positively to the work environment, will be assigned of particular importance in evaluation of applicants.

Applicants must be able to document good written and oral presentation skills. Applicants should be fluent in English and Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish, both orally and in writing. If the successful candidate is not fluent in one of the Scandinavian languages at the time of hire, then it is expected that he/she will acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to the successful completion by passing the Bergen test within three years.

Applicants will be evaluated by an expert committee. Short-listed applicants will be called for an interview and trial lecture. These will be decisive for the appointment.

If there are many applicants, an internal committee may be convened to identify the most relevant candidates in the pool. These candidates will then be evaluated by expert committee. All applicants will be advised in writing of the outcome.
