About the position

A PhD fellowship is available at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University (Bodø, Norway) on genomic and transcriptomic differentiation of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) in the North Atlantic.

The position is for 3 years and will be available from 1st March 2019.

Anthropogenic disturbance of aquatic ecosystems is increasing, with ecosystem level effects attributed to translocations and escape of hatchery stocks. Consequent introgressions can radically alter characteristics, fitness, and persistence of natural endemic populations. Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) are hatchery reared as salmon cleaner fish. Using novel transcriptomic and genomic approaches you will investigate adaptation to a semi-pelagic habit in the lumpfish phylogeny, and consider the potential for introgression of translocated commercial stocks to disturb the population genomics and local adaptation of natural populations.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for motivated and creative applicants with a strong academic record and the ability to collaborate with other members of an international multidisciplinary team, whilst developing their own research project.

The grades at the qualifying MSc examination need to be C or better (ECTS scale from A-E) to be admitted to the program.

At the time of taking up the appointment, the successful candidate should have completed an MSc degree in a relevant field, such as Animal sciences, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Ecology, or Aquaculture, a good working knowledge of bioinformatics is essential.

The candidate should have prior practical experience of basic laboratory skills related to molecular biology, population genetics, physiology, or metabolism, and be able to conduct in vivo trials in both laboratory as well as production animals.

Knowledge of English and good collaborative skills are essential. For non-native speakers proficiency in oral and written English should be documented either by the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification or internationally recognized certificates, such as TOEFL, IELTS, APIEL or similar. Skills in Scandinavian language is an advantage for the position.

The selected candidate will join the PhD programme in Aquatic Biosciences at Nord University and is expected to complete a doctorate within the three-year project period. The candidate should fulfill the admission requirements of this PhD programme at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture and participate in the training components stipulated in regulations of the PhD program. We offer

The annual salary for PhD candidates is set at wage level 51 (approximately 449 400,-) in the Norwegian State Salary Scale.

As an employee at the Nord University, the Fellow will become a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and will get access toother social benefits. A statutory amount to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will automatically be deducted from the salary.
