North Logistics (CHNL) is one of two university centers within the Nord University Business School devoted to the High North and Arctic issues. CHNL aims to take on a leading role in research and teaching in Arctic transportation and logistics with a special focus on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and the Northeast Passage (NEP) between NW Europe and NE Asia. The center has a strong network and cooperation with Norwegian and universities and research organisations in Russia, US Alaska, China, Japan and South Korea. CHNL provides information and critical data to commercial shipping and support industries on current Arctic transport and logistics operations from CHNL’s Information Office in Murmansk, Russia.

About the position

The Centre for High North Logistics (CHNL) will strengthen its academic and research activities with two new Researcher positions in maritime transportation and logistics with a focus on the High North. One of the positions is a permanent 100% position as a Researcher. The other is a temporary Researcher position, either full-time or part-time. Applicants must state which of the two Researcher positions they are applying for as part of the application process.

The candidates will be part of an international research team at CHNL. The positions will further strengthening research activities at the CHNL with focus on innovative and viable logistics solutions for the Arctic region. The research activities can be tailored to the candidates’ own research interests, but should concern the following ongoing research topics at CHNL:

  • Modelling and development of an interconnected and innovative Arctic transportation and logistics system based on future predicted traffic patterns;
  • Ship traffic analysis along the Eurasian Arctic Coast;
  • Strategic and socio-economic significance of transshipment hubs for Arctic shipping;
  • Current and future investment needs and financing mechanism for Arctic infrastructure development; Cost-benefit-risk analysis of Arctic shipping;
  • Future cargo base for Arctic shipping and import/export analysis; and
  • Operational risks and environmental impact assessments of Arctic shipping, including preparedness, response, and mitigation methods.

The Researcher positions are ideal for persons that want to develop a strong network and publication record in these areas. Excellent conditions for research, including funding for travel and student assistants for motivated candidates.

We seek Researchers who can demonstrate significant research publications and have the ability to initiate and develop research projects and activities. It is crucial for CHNL to initiate and participate in application writing to various funding sources, for example to the Research Council of Norway and the EU.

Although the primary duties are within research, the candidate is expected to be active members of the Business School’s faculty and participate in teaching at the bachelor, master and doctoral level; and contributes to the development of the academic environment at the Business School together with other colleagues.

The employment period for the temporary Researcher position is first for one year, with the possibility of extension.

The person employed in the permanent Researcher position will have the main office at the Business School in Bodø, but must also travel as needed to the CHNL’s offices in Kirkenes in Northern Norway and Murmansk in NW Russia. For the temporary Researcher position, the main office location will be agreed on later.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must have relevant PhD or equivalent within the business-related subject area with a focus on transportation and logistics, for example: transport and logistics; value chain analysis and management; economic analysis; international trade and trade innovation and entrepreneurship; markets, strategy and management; oil and gas markets; energy markets; natural resource development; industrial development and regional development.
  • Applicants must have good communication skills in written and oral English, to interact with both academic and industrial environment. Knowledge of Norwegian or equivalent Scandinavian languages is considered an advantage.
  • Documented pedagogical competence as well as experience from teaching, contributions to academic research and project work will be considered as one advantage.
  • A Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (Norwegian: Universitetpedagogisk utdanning) or equivalent is required for the position. Applicants, who cannot document basic competence in teaching, must acquire this competence within a two-year period. North University offers a course in university teaching which covers this requirement.

In assessing applicants, emphasis will be placed on previous relevant research in the field of transportation and logistics and teaching experience in related fields. In addition, emphasis will be placed on the applicants’ specialization in relation to CHNL's needs and to the applicant's professional adaptation in relation to other researchers at CHNL.

It is expected that the hired Researchers participate in internal qualification courses with a view to obtaining a professional qualification.

Applicants will be evaluated by an expert committee. Short-listed applicants will be called for an interview and trial lecture. These will be decisive for the appointment.

If there are many applicants, an internal committee may be convened to identify the most relevant candidates in the pool. These candidates will then be evaluated by an expert committee. All applicants will be advised in writing of the outcome.
