The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year postdoctoral position. The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway.

About MINA

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) has about 200 employees and undertakes teaching, research and dissemination within the fields of geology, soil science, environmental chemistry, forestry, ecology, natural resource management, renewable energy, nature-based tourism. The faculty has ca. 600 students, and approximately 90 PhD-students.

The employees of the faculty are significant participants in their respective fields of expertise, both nationally and internationally and have a high level of scientific production.

The current position is part of a BiodivERsA project that includes several collaborative partners around Europe and the Americas, looking to investigate the threats to the integrity of Amazonian floodplain habitats from deforestation, hydroelectric dams, and climate change. These threats are increasingly severe, but to date Amazon biodiversity scenarios have not considered these critical environments.

Building on decades of floodplain-focused research in the Amazon by consortium members, we will improve the characterization of Amazonian whitewater floodplain habitats and inundation dynamics, allowing us to

1) scale up existing fish, floodplain forest, and phytoplankton diversity datasets

2) evaluate the potential impacts of regional drivers, such as climate, land use change and hydroelectric dams on floodplain habitats, and

3) engage a large panel of stakeholders at local and regional scales in seeking sustainable strategies for tropical wetland conservation.

Main tasks

The post-doc will focus on the Juruá river region of the Brazilian Amazon and work closely with local communities. Major tasks will include examining the effectiveness of local community-based fisheries management by characterizing foodwebs across floodplain lakes under different levels of protection from commercial fisheries overexploitation.

The post-doc will also quantify the degree of frugivory of all fish species of commercial and/or subsistence importance to explore the potential future depletion of any tree species likely to incur dispersal limitation due to the functional loss of effective seed dispersal by frugivorous fish.

Qualifications and skills

The successful applicant must hold a PhD degree within a relevant scientific area. The applicant must document expertise and interest in the research subject.

Preferred candidates will have all or most of the following:

• Ecological research experience from Amazonian forests (essential); knowledge of Amazonian aquatic systems is desirable
• Previous work with local Amazonian communities (essential)
• Solid methodological, analytical and quantitative (including modelling) skills (essential)
• Strong record of publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Experience with managing field assistants and research projects (preferable)
• Fluency in Portuguese (essential)
• Documentation of good collaborative skills (ability to establish contacts, and cooperate with other institutions and persons)

Remuneration and information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1352 Postdoctoral Fellow, wage framework 24, salary grade 59-65 (NOK 515 200 - 576 100), depending on qualifications.
