Stilling:

Researcher position at MET Norway

Søknadsfrist 4. juli

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has an opening for a permanent position for a Researcher working with coupled numerical models. The position is affiliated with the Ocean and Ice Division, Research and Development Department in Oslo. The Ocean and Ice Division has a responsibility in developing and operating numerical models for forecasting of ocean currents, sea level, waves and sea-ice. The work is carried out in collaboration with national and international partners and is largely funded externally. See http://met.no/Hav_og_is/ for more information.

Meteorologisk institutt

Modern meteorology requires management and analysis of enormous amounts of data, and offers great and exciting professional challenges. Since the institute was established in 1866, the Norwegian meteorologists have played a key role in this development. Norwegian Meteorological Institute is today a leading international environment of expertise in operational meteorology and climatology.

The vacant position is related to the development of a coupled atmosphere, ocean, wave and ice numerical prediction system for the Arctic. The work will take place in close cooperation with a group of scientists from the Ocean and Ice Division and from the Development Center for Weather Forecasting department at MET Norway. The main focus will be on physical processes in the coupled atmosphere, ocean, waves and sea ice system with the ultimate goal to improve the predictability of Arctic extreme weather, waves and sea-ice edge. The convection-permitting atmospheric model (Harmonie-AROME, a part of the joint ALADIN-HIRLAM system) will be coupled to the spectral wave model (WAM) and sea-ice/ocean model system (ROMS-CICE). The coupling development will be based on the OASIS-MCT coupler.

Required qualifications

  • master or PhD degree in geophysics, applied mathematics or equivalent
  • documented work experience with numerical geophysical models
  • experience and proven knowledge in applied mathematical / scientific programming within the Linux environment
  • experience with software development in Fortran and Python
  • the working language in the institute is Norwegian, and for all applicants fluency in written and spoken English is required, and for foreign applicants a willingness to learn Norwegian.
  • good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently

Preferred qualifications

  • experience in working with coupled numerical model systems
  • experience with model coupling tools such as OASIS-MCT or others

Working conditions

  • salary on the governmental salary scales dependent on qualifications and experience, NOK 435.500 – 695.500 pr. year, higher salary can be negotiated in case the selected applicant has excellent qualifications
