Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Information Systems
About the position
A fixed-term 100 % position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Social Sciences as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Information Systems, affiliated to the Department of Information Systems, for a period of 2 years. The position is located at Campus Kristiansand. The starting date is negotiable with the Faculty.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has approximately 110 employees and 1700 students and comprises the following four departments: Department of Information Systems, Department of Political Science and Management, Department of Global Development and Planning, and Department of Sociology and Social Work.
The position is affiliated with the Centre for Integrated Emergency Management (CIEM) at the University of Agder, which is an interdisciplinary research centre focusing on how information and communication technologies can support innovative practice in emergency preparedness and response. The centre involves 25 researchers with expertise in information systems, computer science and social sciences. At the core of CIEM’s research is collection, integration, analysis and presentation of data from different sources, as a basis for enhanced information sharing, situational awareness and decision-support in emergency response. An overall goal of CIEM is to contribute to strengthening societal security and community resilience.
The candidate is expected to contribute to CIEM’s research on real-time collection, integration, analysis and visualisation of data from relevant sources (sensors and human-generated data) for supporting situational awareness and decision-making. Ability to suggest potential data sources, open data and linked data that can be used for analysis will be considered an advantage. The position will involve fieldwork and collaboration with emergency responders, and participation in CIEM’s project activities to demonstrate the potential of the use of big data and real-time data analytics for emergency management. Scientific publications in relevant high-quality outlets are expected during the project period.
The candidate should have a doctoral degree in information systems, ICT or other relevant subject areas. Potential applicants must have had their doctoral thesis approved by the time of the application deadline.
The candidate should document expertise in several of the following research areas:
- Big data and data analytics
- Real-time data processing and monitoring
- The architecture of real-time data analysis
- Data integration and visualisation
- Control room systems
- Situational awareness
Fluency in written and oral English is a prerequisite. Candidates who are also fluent in a Scandinavian language will be preferred.

Former knowledge and experience in emergency response will be an advantage but is not a requirement. The candidate should be familiar with regulatory frameworks and privacy issues related to collecting and analyzing data, such as GDPR and national ethical guidelines.
The candidate should be proactive and cooperative, as well as being able to work independently. Personal qualities and suitability for the position will be emphasised.

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1352, NOK gross salary per year 504.700 – 573.100. Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
