The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences have a vacancy for a temporary position as PhD Research Fellow in Cybersecurity for 5G critical communications

About the position

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a temporary 100 % position as PhD Research Fellow in Cybersecurity for 5G critical communications from September 2021.

The position is located at the Department of Microsystems (IMS) and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is campus Vestfold, Horten.

The appointment is for a term of four years with 25% teaching obligations or the employment period will be three years of full time with no teaching obligations. This is negotiable and needs to decided before entering the job.

About the PhD-project

The PhD project is part of the Raksha research project funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The aim of Raksha is to improve security for critical communications provided by 5G systems. The PhD project will focus on technologies for Cyber Security in general, with specific focus on security for 5G Core Networks. The research project will typically involve theoretical modelling, development of prototype software tools, analysis and experimentation, writing of scientific publications, as well as some project management.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) equivalent higher education qualifications in Cybersecurity/Digital security.
  • Applicants with a Master's degree in Informatics, ICT, Cryptofraphy or similar, with a strong focus on security, may also apply. These applicants should carefully explain the relevance of their degree for the position in their cover letter.
  • Applicants who are currently pursuing their masters degree have until 15. august 2021 to complete the final exam.

The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in team work. Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.

The candidate must have good programming skills, be knowledgeable about virtualization technologies and have an in-depth understanding of web-technologies. Extensive knowledge of cybersecurity/digital security is expected.

It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems within three months of accession in the position. For admission to the Programme the weighted average grade is B or higher is usually required.

Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.

Note: Only candidates with confirmed citizenship from EU, NATO and "Five Eyes" countries are eligible to apply for this position. The reason for this is that cyber security research may involve collaboration with defense and national security organizations where a security clearance may be needed.

Salary

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 482 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position.

A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.

The Academic Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellowships is responsible for the appointment. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. The candidates deemed best qualified will be invited to an interview.
