About the position
The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as PhD Research Fellow in ““Computational fluid dynamics and process simulations modelling of biomass gasification reactors” from 1.1.2021.
The position is attached to the Department of Process, Energy and Environmental Technology and repor ts to the Head of Department. The scholarship is financed from the Norwegian Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME), Bio4Fuels.
The place of employment is Porsgrunn.
About the PhD-project
As a partner Bio4Fuels, USN will contribute in the study of preparing for piloting and upscaling of gasification reactors. Gasification is used for thermal conversion of biomass to synthesis gas, which again will be converted to biofuel or other highly valuable chemicals. Particularly biomass from lignocellulosic and organic residues will be used. Developing gasification technologies, which enable operation at maximum thermodynamic efficiency and optimal yield, is one of the ambitions in Bio4Fuels. Developed CPFD and process models are needed to select appropriate process combinations from a wide range of options. The models will be validated by experimental data.
The aim of this PhD project is to establish computational particle fluid dynamics and process simulation models to generate insight into the framework needed for process design and pilot plant planning. This will be used as basis for successful piloting of gasification technology for production of biofuels/ valuable chemicals from biomass.
The appointment is for a period of three years. The position does not include teaching duties. The position will include cooperation withpartners in Bio4Fuel.
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in Chemical engineering, Process Technology or Energy and Environmental Technology.
It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Process, Energy and Automation Engineering. According to the formal PhD regulations, an average grade B or better from the Master degree, in addition to a grade B or better of the final master project, is required.
The staff at the faculty work within subject teams to a large extent, and the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.
Other requirements are experience in computational fluid dynamics and process simulations. Knowledge about thermal and/or biological treatment of biomass and understanding of industrial process systems is an advantage. Work experience is an advantage. The successful candidate should also master written and oral English, and have skills for independent work and work in team with scientists, industry partners and students.

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 482 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 may be considered. Salary NOK kr 482 200 – 618 600 (LT 54-68).
A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.
Appointment to the position will be carried out by The Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellows. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. Short-listed candidates will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to present and discuss their projects.
